Default Need Some Leather Advice...

When I mentioned to a friend of mine that I'd just acquired
a USMC knife, he asked if it had the leather washer grip. When
I said it did, he asked how to tighten up loose ones on one of his Dad's
old hammers. I'm using Leather'N'Rich on mine, but they're already
nice and snug. Anybody got any suggestions?
I'm thinking this would work the same for a knife, , but have never
dealt with this before. I said I'd ask the folks here. TIA, TACC1

A hammer is a different duck. There should be a plate welded to the bottom of the grip. Take another hammer and whack it solidly a couple of times. After long use, the plate works loose and allows the handle to loosen.

He could press the stack to one side or another and then wrap some wet rawhide into the space. When it dries, it will be TIGHT.

A little off the subject, but I loves me a leather-handled hammer. I just bought a new 16 oz. Estwing, because mine seems to have walked off. Bought my son one, too. He's fixing up his house, and needs one more than I do, but every so often, I have to swing a hammer all day long, and that's the only one for me.

By extension, I am also partial to leather knife handles. I still look forward to trying my first set of leather bicycle grips.

There are some things that can't be improved upon.

I think something like a Ph neutral liquid like Lexol, would tighten it up pretty well.

Thanks for the responses. When I see him tomorrow I'll pass these
along. Leather sure is great. All I wear in winter, over flannel and a vest. And I don't even have to comment on holsters... TACC1.

Does anyon know who works on those knives with leather washers for the handle? I have an M3 fighting knife which needs a few new washers.

It's gunsmith-level work. The pommel of these knives are pinned in, and the pin can be removed, but is usually destroyed in the process. Getting a new one is easy (they are generic steel blind pins).
You can easily make a new washer to add to your stack while it's apart. There are youtube vids out there for how to do this.
