Default Leather Sling Help!!

A friend just brought me a Type 99 Arisaka that his father got on Saipan in WW2. The original leather sling is still on it but has dried out so bad that it is like a board. I don't think I could get it off of the rifle without snapping it.
Any hints on how to soften it up?????? I would like to save it if at all possible.

Baseball glove standard: Neats oil.

Available at all sporting goods stores.

But even though the leather might soften, its strength will be seriously compromised.

Remove it, and send it to one of the holster or belt makers and get it made to order.

Pecard's Leather Dressing is made for old leather. It may take several applications but it will put life back into old leather.

Are you sure that the sling is leather and not rubberized canvas? If it’s hardened rubber, it can be heated with a hair dryer until the rubber softens up enough to remove. Either way, I’d take care in removing the sling - original Arisaka slings are very valuable to collectors and can be worth more than the rifle.

You may want to post our question to the Gun Boards Forum at Firearms Of The Rising Sun and see what the real Arisaka collectors advise.
