The First, And Also The Latest Holster I've Made
In my back shed I found my first holster, sort of. When I was around thirteen I took this old right hand holster my dad had and reversed it for left hand, making it an unintentional "roughout" holster, added a new loop around it and now had a home for my Single Six. I just rediscovered it in a box of other stuff. Here it is with the holster I finished yesterday. Back then I never got around to dying the holster loop black. I've butchered many a cowhide until I felt semi confident enough to make these for other people, about twenty five years ago. My dad was good at everything and I'm glad that included having leather tools arond when I was a squirt. The recent holster is an A.W. Brill style for a 5" Colt .41 Army Special.

Wyatt,
What a great find. You have come along way since that "reversal". Bet it is special to have that very first one. Great looking Brilliant on the last one.

I just got a tooled cross draw for a 2" M&P 4screw from Wyatt a couple weeks ago. It was really nice, just what I wanted. I get my camera going again, I'll post some pics.

Very nice work Wyatt.
Looks like you have learned a thing or two
since handcrafting that first one.
Beautiful work and be proud, most don't have
the patience or skill to do that work.

My Dad was also a one man wonder. I don't think there was anything he could not do. Many of the things he did he taught himself how to do, including leather work. I still kick myself for not having the patience to let him teach me to play the guitar.
That new one is very nice. Do you still have the first one you tooled and put together? Mine is hidden away.

Beautiful job. So many homemade holsters look like homemade holsters but that looks like a professionally made, finely finished quality product.

My dad was a crazy great woodcarver. I have his carving tools now. But we all have our thing and there's a good probability that playing the guitar was as remote to you as taxadermy or building a code-passing room addition is to me, which my dad could do with his eyes closed. Your art comes through in holster making and other non gun outlets I'm sure. How many people do you know who do nothing? Who create nothing? Your dad's influences are there and the legacy is your creativity. You just followed your own unintentional direction. That's how I feel anyway, even though my dad was a hellava holster maker..when he wasn't creating a million other things.
