I was looking for a holster for my Ruger Blackhawk. Amidst all the nylon and kydex I found this old Lawrence. I haven't had a chance to clean it yet but it fits perfectly and it should make a nice trail / hunting holster.

That is so neat when that happens. Before my daughter went off to college we'd spend many Saturdays at auctions and one day bought a couple of flats of miscellaneous gun "stuff". It had all kinds of stuff in it. Snap caps, holsters, sights, etc. When I bought my 686, I was looking for a holster and much like you remembered that there were a couple in the box. One fit my 639 so that was gone but the leather one looked like a candidate. Sure enough the S&W leather 21/44 and my 4" 686 were made for each other. Like you, I feel leather has "personality" where the others just have function.

Yep - nice find there.

I've found most of the mom & pop gun stores have a "junk" box or shelf and it really pays to take the time to go thru it.

I found this Lawrence holster in said box - cost me $5.00 and a little polish & buffing.

Colt Huntsman 6" W/ G.Lawrence holster

Great things are to be learned here. Thanks to the post from CH47gunner I now know how to carry my Colt Huntsman. Have the same holster and used to carry my 19-3 in it when hunting on horseback. Stopped when muzzle wear on the bluing started, and it has been in retirement ever since. Not anymore.

Here's the leather I found for my Blackhawk. I whole heartedly agree that a nylon or kydex holster for this fine old pistol would be an abomination and a crime. I'm a leather kind of guy when it comes to holsters for ANY gun.

Mel Tellis said it in a song years ago...."Don't give me no plastic saddle, I wanna feel that leather when I ride?" :D Same goes for gun holsters.

I bought this Hunter holster in 1962 when I bought my first mdl.28.& a slightly used holster for a 1903 Colt.

There is nothing that compares with the feel, smell and lasting of leather holsters. A 1911 or a great S&W revolver doesn't belong in plastic or nylon.
I agree with Mel.

I go dumpster diving in gunshop junk holster boxes about every three months and have brought some fine pieces out of the shadows and turned them into cash. Here's a few. These three cost $55 and sold for $395, and now others can enjoy them.
A.E. Nelson for a Colt pocket .32 or .380..

Myres holster specifically for a 6" Python...

The gold mine! a Heiser for an 8" Luger...

This A.E. Nelson lefty holster for a 2" K Frame is marked "S.F. Gun Exchange", just like the .32 Colt holster above. I still have this one. That's a smaller Cobra in it...

Just curious about the Colt 1903 holster. Could that have been part of a chest holster? My dad was a B-29 pilot during WWII and when he was in the air he wore that rig. When he passed away I got the pistol but I turned his house wrong-side-out including the yard building and the attic looking for that holster but never found it. I once saw a pic of him and his crew in their flight suits and jackets and he had this rig on. If my memory serves (and it doesn't always these days) it looked a lot like that. Do you have the shoulder and/or chest strap(s) that go with it? I'd love to see a pic of the entire rig if you do. Thanks,

WJ

Nothing like leather. My duty sidearm, M&P 45 ACP sits in a Galco and all off duty sidearms are in leather IWB's.

I can't say NO if I find a reasonably priced; Sparks, Kramer, Davis, EPS, Heiser, Safariland, etc.

I can confess to buying rigs for guns I didn't own yet...Then use the possession of the proper holster as the excuse to finally buy the gun . I know...We have ALL done it.

You've been peekin!:D Guess I'm busted. And I'll also be willin' to wager that I'm not the only one that has a dresser drawer (at least) full of holster that I'll never use. I have had two "holster sales" over the years and I STILL have way way to many. Most I keep in the hopes (per OP) that I'll soon get the gun that goes in it. ;)

This was from a few years back. Part of my El Paso Saddlery collection. I've added a few more Threeperson rigs since then and a belt or two. Most of them from GunBroker or local shows.
None of the half dozen EPS 1942 Tanker rigs I have. One of my favorite field rigs for larger revolvers.

Boys, I got a few old timers with things to carry in them (Holder Thingys as my friend at the Pawn shop calls em). Coupla Heisers, a Towson Perfect fit, and unmarked (looks like South of the border to me) with a Ruger. 1926 Colt is pretty period correct for one of them. The lined flap is a Brauer Bros.
