Default One Size fits all holster?

Before I start, let me just say that I have a better than decent holster for every handgun I own. ( Often two or three if I carry them.) That said, when I go to the range for an afternoon of informal shooting, I often take an eclectic mix of handguns with me. (For example, today I hauled out a 4" K frame , a M&P PRo, Glock 26 and a 1911.) Since I take 2-4 guns/ trip, I almost never bring a holster. I just find it impractical to drag out extra dedicated holsters and swapping them every 1/2 hr. Consequently, I end up leaving whatever gun I'm shooting on the bench while I reset targets.

So, has anybody else found a cure in a " do all" holster that will make do for a variety of gun styles/sizes? I don't need a perfect fit, just something secure enough to walk with. I don't even care about the other usual "must haves" of fit, gun position, printing, retention, etc.
I'm thinking that something in ballistic nylon with little to no pre molding might just do the key.

If anyone has been down this road before, I'd appreciate any advice you might share.

I have a N8squared holster that fits several of my pistols. I bought it for my LC9 but my Glock 19, P-238 and Model 36 fit in it as well. It is a very comfortable holster. I also have a Slide Holster that fits pistols from my full size 1911 to my model 36 snubby, I don't use it anymore though. The belt clip will not always hold the holster when I draw so the holster sometimes comes out with the pistol. I have a grocery sack full of holsters I have collected over the years.

Not sure it's what you're looking for, but have you considered a hard case that can carry 4+ guns at at time? I use them for transport but also when I personally go to the range.

I got mine from Harbor Freight, not super quality but good enough for this task and a lot cheaper than a Pelican. Got the one with pull foam like a Pelican that can be custom fit, created slots where I can lay the handguns. If you only need 4 or so slots you'll have a lot of foam left which will help it hold its shape and not wear out.

18" x 12-3/4" x 6" Aluminum Case

It even has firmer dividers so you could make a case with a foam side to hold guns and a section for ammo. Tough to beat at $30 or so, and I don't need it waterproof or shipping capable. For that I have Pelicans. No doubt Lowes, Home Depot sell something similar.

Thanks Gents, Maybe a oversized slide holster is the answer. I'm not concerned about drawing as long as it holds the gun .

p.s. Bluegrass, I'm good with getting them there. I have an oversized (midway) range bag that will hold 4 guns , ammo, targets, muffs, etc. My issue is while I'm away from the bench at the firing line/down range .

If you just want a holster to wear at the range to stick a gun in while changing targets and such I'd get one that fits the largest gun I carry to the range. You can just stick the others down in it when using them. They should be fine just walking back and forth to your targets.
If one of them is just too small for the holster stick it in your pocket. MHO.

I use a holster made by Dave Newcomb (God rest his soul).

I have one for 4" and 6" handguns.

Not Good at all for Revolvers but I have similar one
and it works well with several Semi-autos I own

I've found that Uncle Mikes Sidekick holsters will do just fine for about 95% of my holster needs. I'm sure you can find one that would work fine for what you're talking about.

And they're inexpensive, too.

I think you have the right idea - I don't like leaving a firearm, particularly a handgun, unattended anywhere, but especially the range. I agree most of the Uncle Mike holster's work well, and are low cost. Recently, I bought a Bianchi Viper Medium sized shoulder holster that will fit anything from a 2.0 inch barreled J-frame, to a 3.0 inch barreled K-frame, as well as a CZ-82, and a H&K P7. The cost was most reasonable ($35.00 + free shipping). This is not something you would want to carry a pistol in all day, but it will hold all of these different firearms securely, in fact, a bit too securely if you are interested in a speed draw. I'm not, and I don't mind the extra security a bit. The Yaqui slide type holster might also work for you, but be careful as the one shortfall of the design is when sitting, sometimes the muzzle of your piece will contact a surface (like the seat of the chair), and become dislodged. I had a LEO friend that this happened to in a restaurant, and it embarrassed him something awful.

Best of luck,

Dave

NCW Ray called it. Uncle Mike's Side Bet.

Uncle Mike's Universal Fit Belt Slide Holster at Galls

It's not the best holster in the world for any one gun, but it works great for a bunch of 'em. You can wear it right side or left side. The thumb snap is held in place by velcro, so it reversible and can be made longer or shorter to fit the gun.

I have a later style milsurp nylon holster that I would think would would fit just about anything. A 1911 simply disappears into it. Saw some MOLLE type at Miramar that have adjusting straps so I'm guessing those would fit anything M9 size & smaller.

I have an in the waist band Bagmaster holster that will also hold a spare mag. I use it for a Glock 19, Glock 39 and S&W Shorty Forty Five.

Thanks for the ideas guys! I stopped by a new (to me) gunshop today and found a box full of used holsters ( along with a very nice 2 1/5" mod 66 no dash ;-). There was a Uncle Mikes nylon belt slide holster ( similar to the two linked above) in size 5 that seemed to have promise. It's an ugly thing, a big glob of ballistic nylon with no real shape but still, it looked as "universal" as a holster could get. Took it home and ran most of the safe through it. ( K frames, L frames, 1911's, Glocks, M&P;s Sigs, Walther P22....... Everything not only fit, but pretty darn well! The only down side is that the opening closes somewhat when empty so holstering takes a little patience.

p.s. Saved so much on the holster that I justified the mod 66-0 coming hole in it :-)

FWIW, I ordered and tried the UM Side Bet Holster suggested. Complete disaster. It fit nothing but my BG380 even remotely. Even J frames and P22 seemed to big. Things like a K frame or 1911 just wanted to fall out immediately. Almost wonder if they sent the baby bet in the wrong package. The package shows a full size Glock holstered in a side bet. The muzzle of my G17 had to be STUFFED through this holster and the trigger was still left exposed.

BTW, Here is a pic of the holster I did find that seems to work as mentioned in the post above.

Safepacker holsters from The Wilderness in Phoenix would serve your purposes --- get their largest size, called, I think, Government Plus 2 or something similar, and also their belt to which the holster is attached with velcro and mechanically for a high-security mount. These holsters are also nice for general purpose carry, protect the gun, don't telegraph "gun", and if it's possible to damage or wear one out, I see no evidence of it.
