Default Brand/Maker specific threads- S. D. Myres

Thanks for the new section dedicated to Gun Leather & Carry gear.

It might be interesting to have some threads dedicated to various makers and it would be great to start with one dedicated to the famous S. D. Myres company of Sweetwater,, and later El Paso, Texas.

Floral carved J frame holster with hammer shield and matching cartridge slide.

On the left, a floral tooled holster with hammer protector and retention strap. This one belonged to and was carried by two Sheriffs in a county in Eastern Arkansas toting a pre 21 4 inch .44Special

On the right a floral tooled, lined Holster for a Browning Hi Power.

These Myres holsters reportedly belonged to the SAC of the Houston FBI office.

Another Myres holster.

My favorite Myres shoulder holster.

Great thread idea, Tony.

Guess it's just you & me,Tony.
I like this left hand lined flap holster. It was made for a 5" M&P and has the rectangular logo stamped on the front on the flap.

I guess I should play. Even though I've never actually carried any of my guns in one,the Texas jockstrap is my favorite to look at. This is a Myres with an AWA Peacekeeper.

And a couple of K-22's in the more traditional Myres holster.

One of the things I like about the Myres holsters is that, unlike Heiser, they came in quite a few different colors. Nearly all of the Heisers I have are the same russet brown. These aren't mine, they may even belong to one of the gentlemen who posted above, but it will give you some idea of what I mean.

A swivel flap holster for a 4" Combat Masterpiece that I imagine was used for dress and parade duty by a Sheriff or Chief of Police.

The one on the left fits a model 41 & I think the one on the right fits a 4" N frame.

Here's my only "Tio Sam" holster, bought it out of the old holster bin at a LGS for $10. I'm not sure what it's for, but I suspect a 4-3/4" SAA.

Anyone know why the safety straps on the floral carved holsters weren't floral carved as well?

Good question, I don't know the answer but few makers typically did carve the straps. Colorado Saddlery is one that did and I think El Paso Saddlery sometimes does as well.

I wish they would have done the straps too. The plane straps make the rig look unfinished. Although, it won't stop me from buying any floral carved rigs in the future

Straps seem to be the first part of holsters that begin exhibiting stress. Often you'll see an otherwise fine holster with a strap that's crazed, cracked or outright split. Carving or otherwise thinning this area out and weakening the strap may not be the best idea from a practicality standpoint.

I've got basketweave straps on some holsters and they've held up fine. Others have decorative grooving around the edges. Also held up fine.

I've thought about that too, but it seems a thicker piece of leather could be used to account for the carving on the strap.

Well, Tio Sam's not around anymore, so all we can do is guess as to why he didn't carve the straps.

Here's a nice carved flap holster for a 7.5" SAA I recently found hidden in a box of junk holsters someone was selling.

Here's a SD Myres that I just got.... it's marked with the number 999 under the holster on the skirt. It's very, very similar to a BBQ rig that Dan M posted back in December of 2010 marked "190".

It appears to be for a 3 1/2" to 4" barrel. The N frame is a little tight and a K frame is too loose. I'll set up some pics later and see what the consensus is.

Geez that's a beautiful holster. Styling and workmanship, and by its proportions appearing to be for an N frame. Has Prohibition-era Feds written all over it.

Thanks, F.T.!

Here's a close up of the "999" mark... kinda fuzzy, I had to shoot under the strap at an angle. You couldn't see the mark without pulling the holster completely out of the strap. I would have sworn there was nothing there.

And here it is with a 3 1/2" N frame... snug as a bug!

The speed loader is marked "Revolver Cartridge Clip Corp., New York". I'll take some more pics later and post in another section of the forum.

Default Myres rig

I have two so far....One for a N frame 3.5" barrel and one for a K frame 2.5"

I only have the N frame photographed so far....

I will have to drag out the K frame one and snap a few photos of it....

Default Floral tooled S.D. Myres for K frame snub

I have had this one for a while, but lack a suitable period correct gun to keep it company. For now, a very nice model 64 will help it stay in shape.

What's with this "drag it out"? I can't leave all of my guns out in the open to admire, for obvious reasons, but that's not the case with my leather. No sir,I have 'em everywhere!

Tom, I can not leave things laying about....it sets a bad example and my wife will have us living up to our necks in nick-nacks. Plus, it also helps to keep things put up, that way she never really knows what or how much I really have

It might be interesting to have some threads dedicated to various makers and it would be great to start with one dedicated to the famous S. D. Myres company of Sweetwater,, and later El Paso, Texas.

Floral carved J frame holster with hammer shield and matching cartridge slide.

When a young officer I really didn,t care for anything othere than basketweave. As I approach the autum of my years I appreciate these holsters as works of art and beauty, kinda like a 1946 Pickup Truck

I have one Myres holster with both a retention strap and a hammer protector. With respect to the retention strap and the perfect gun to holster fit it reminds me of what Jeff Cooper said about double action semi autos: "an ingenious solution to a non-existent problem".

As a person who has never run across (or had the chance to buy) an original Myres holster, I want to thank the posters for all the lovely examples shown for my/our enjoyment. For the time being, I am "getting by" with a Geo. Lawrence copy of the Myres/Threepersons holster. My 4" Model 64 is snuggled in it, in the night stand.

This is one of the later SD Myres holsters made in the original location in Sweetwater. Not very common, especially made specifically for a 3" Model 66.

Here's a couple more- an IWB for a Colt pocket auto and a Pink Simms model that fastened to your suspender as shown.

Could we have a pic of the rear, and of the marking?

Default S.D. Myres duty rig

Belt, handcuff case, dump boxes, and holster all by Myres. This is the first all Myres duty rig that I have seen. It is not nearly as fancy as the floral carved rigs, but I am sure that it was appreciated daily.

Also shown - Early model 66 with SS sights and Fuzzy Farrant stocks.

Here is my other Myres Holster that I neglected to add to this Brand Specific thread. It is their Model 445:

Recently I had the good fortune to stumble across an original copy of Sandra Myres' biography of Tio Sam Myres -- then discovered it is even signed! And being a Master's thesis for a Texas university, it's full-sized and about 1/2" thick. Unlike the copy that I've read on the internet, this original has many photographs and is complete with footnotes to original interviews with the surviving Myres family members. Here's a pair of pics; it bears no copyright notice and copyright law then means that, because of its date, it can be reproduced legally. I mean to make reproductions available, to more accurately preserve history, because my own Master's thesis on the U.S. Holster Industry circa 1989, I'm told by my university is lost to time. Shame, it was a snapshot of a very different set of players than we have today.

That is a terrible shame! You didn't even keep a copy for yourself?

Here is a Myres with dog ear that I picked up recently. Needs a little restoration, as someone decided to remove a portion of the welt. Penciled on the back, Mag 3 1/2.

I suspect it belonged to William S. Hart at one time, as he must have inked his name on the back.

Bruce
