Default Another American Classic Gunleather home run

I asked our own 05CarbonDRZ to build me two special holsters. I recently bought a pristine 2" Model 15 with Grashorn stag grips. This presented some holster challenges. I asked Alex to do a Basketweave Brill style holster for the gun and a cartridge slide. I wanted something that reminded me of an old detective I worked with who carried a 2" Model 15. It was a good size to not hang under a suit or jacket in a OWB holster. I just wanted a "Texas version". Alex low cut the front of the holster to handle the rear sight.
This is what we called a court rig. I have yet to find anyone having an openly armed BBQ since moving to Texas. What I have seen are Court Rigs. Even in California, as a lawman I had some very nice distinctive rigs I wore openly to court. This was especially true when testifying as a firearms expert. A Texas Lawman in the 70's would have been proud to wear this to court or while working as an investigator. Great gun that now has great leather (the picture doesn't do the leather or gun justice). I will post the other rig later as it has it's own story.

I think the famous Texas armed BBQ's are a fantasy of people not from Texas as what they think happens in the Republic. Now, court guns, very much. Rangers and rural detectives and investigators, absolutely. Have I been to BBQ lunch with cops wearing floral leather, yes. A BBQ with the whole community out openly carrying handguns.....never heard of such a thing.

I've seen several examples lately of 05CarbonDRZ's leatherwork. Beautiful stuff. I particularly like this one.

Very nice rig! Love those grips too, exactly how much bark I want on mine when I order a set for my model 57.

Now that's a sharp looking rig. That's heirloom quality work.

This was a fun project with Alex. It started with buying the cartridge slide....just because it looked nice. I told Alex I would figure out a holster to go with it. When I bought the 2" model 15 I thought immediately that it would be neat in a short Brill Style rig. Alex said he would give it a shot. I asked for the basket pattern to run opposite to the holster body to get it to sort of pop on the cross strap and asked Alex to put his makers stamp in the middle. He was going to have to lower the front of the holster to accommodate the adjustable sights. Right from the first pattern I knew this was going to be special. When I saw the rig coming together I asked Alex to go ahead and do another one for me for a early 50's 2" M&P. I have to dig it out of the safe and do photos this week. The other rig is brown and has a retro feel I will detail when I post on it.
I think Alex captured what I wanted perfectly. A rig that a Texas investigator in the 70's would be proud to carry. Heck, if I had something like this when I started as a cop, it would be my court rig.....and trust me I had a glorious court rig in the late 80's (gorgeous Combat Commander that was hard chromed in several different kinds of hard chrome of the parts smuggled in with Space Shuttle parts in a Sparks black Yaqui slide).
Overall, I think Alex did an outstanding job of taking a vision and making it a reality with great communication throughout the process.

I have a model 15-3 in the 2" myself, that is a gorgeous rig. I especially like having his logo on the cross strap, very classy IMO.

Now onto those stag grips, just where can a fellow find a set like that?

Your new rig is fantastic! I have one of Alex's holsters too. It is floral carved for a 6.5" N frame. He does really nice work! I look forward to seeing the holster he does for the 2" M&P.

Outstanding looking holster and cartridge slide. Befitting a Model 15 with Grashorn grips. I especially liked the part of the second holster in brown. I can see a new trend going on here, new holsters two at a time. Some days I wear brown boots with brown belt, only a brown holster and slide can fill the bill. Other days I wear black boots and black belt, oh well you get the picture.

Default Great Minds

Great minds work alike & in the same direction. I, too, wanted that exact holster for my nickel MD 15. I like the way the nickel sets off Alex's work.

Here is a brown design he made for my MD 66. I am addicted to his work. I believe my guns are not proprely attired if they are not wearing his artwork.

Thank you for sharing!! That is a great looking rig there!! I would not be ashamed to wear it to any court appearance!! I like the idea of having an identical or very similar rig in brown also, as Ky Cowboy points out, some days we want to wear brown, and some days black. Makes sense.

Best Regards, Les
