Default My IWB/OWB dilemma

As I have evolved in my thinking over what my EDC gun should be, I slid into the conclusion that a revolver was most foolproof. Yeah, yeah.... only 5-6 rounds and then reload. But I do not envision a situation where I'm in a firefight needing an unlimited supply of ammo. Maybe I'm the ultimate fool in my thinking, but it has served me well in life so far.

Anyway, I wanted a K frame for CCW and, never having had/carried one before, I bought a Wright Leather Works "Cobra" IWB/OWB hybrid holster for my 3" 65-5. Well.... the gun/holster combo is HUGE!!!! I could not get it inside my pants comfortably. Laugh all you like, but I would need an additional 2-3" larger waist size for it to fit. I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs. There's no way this can fit in my pants and me forgetting that it is there. Wasn't going to happen. So I "deleted" the IWB option and went OWB. Much, much better.

I guess the bottom line is either I buy larger pants (NOT!!!!) or grow a 38" waist (I'm 34-35" right now) to hide this sucker IWB. Since that ain't about to happen, I'll carry OWB. My photos show the arc after wearing it OWB.

The Cobra Hybrid was the perfect choice. It is a very high quality rig and I could find out what worked for me. Lastly, I suggest wearing a CCW belt specifically designed to support the weight. Life is good again.

Look at the Rodek Leather Works, Inc. I carry a 3 inch K frame in their paddle holster. I like it so much, I got one for the 2 inch K. Priced right, great quality, good people. I got rid of a Mernekel, revolver kept falling out, and it was expensive.

Wright Leather Works is a quality holster maker, but for your weapon, physical build and intended purposes, that particular holster has limitations -- chiefly, the thick layered leather and reinforced mouth add too much bulk for IWB.

Strongly recommend a holster made of either the thinner, tougher horsehide, or thin-stretched, chemically stiffened cowhide; no unnecessary layers; and molded very tightly along the lines of the specific model revolver that it will hold.

I often IWB carry a Model 65 LS; the best rig I've found for concealment and comfort is an Alessi Talon. I really didn't think that with an athletic build I'd be able to adequately and comfortably IWB carry a 3" K-frame without going for baggy pants and shorts. The Talon proved me wrong. Highly recommended.

I used a Milt Sparks Summer Special II to carry a 3" 65 IWB. It worked well and doesn't have as much of a "footprint" as the VMII-style holster you have.

While I haven't tried his gear with a K-frame, I have a Side Guard Holsters Quick Clip IWB holster that may work as well. It has a minimal "footprint" and an offset clip to reduce bulk. They also offer models with a snap loop instead of a clip, and either model can be ordered with either a reinforced or unreinforced mouth (unreinforced being thinner). They can also be ordered with different cant angles, so getting a more forward cant, say 15 or 20 degrees, may also help with concealment.

I wear one of Rob's 'Simply Rugged' designs very similar to the OP's.

Revolvers aren't as much fun IWB as a 1911, and even one of those often elicits a recommendation to increase the pants and belt size a couple of inches. I did manage to carry a 1911 in a Summer Special without changing pants, but a Model 19 in a Summer Special was not as much fun.

Looks to me like you are using a good gun, a good holster and a good belt. Sounds like it's going to work out fine.

Been carrying a 3" 65 and later a 66 in a Milt Sparks Summer Special holster since the mid-80s...... I'm 5'9" was 160..... now getting closer to 170 and wear 34" Wranglers.......when carrying IWB I carry at 4 O'clock........ I have to loosen my belt 1 notch.

You've got a good looking holster there .... as noted that's a lot of leather under your belt.

I tried IWB with my M19/M66 snub and found it too uncomfortable. I carry OWB for concealed or open now. For me it is the only way that works for me. I use a Lobo Enhanced Pancake for CC....

I would not recommend getting fatter in order to carry a gun.
You are the same age as me, although taller and slimmer. I was forced to give up carrying both IWB and OWB, at least with a revolcer or any gun over 28 ounces or so. I gave myself a bout of sciatica trying to carry a 35 ounce automatic in a OWB belt holster because I had to pull my belt so tight that it put too much pressure on my spine.
I have success carrying a j frame in a pocket holster, a revolver in a shoulder holster, or an auto in a fanny pack.
