Found An Old Piteado Holster--Now I Need To Find A 'Pre-BBQ' Gun That Fits
My son and I have been collecting what we refer to as "BBQ Guns", fancy gun & holster rigs favored by Texas Rangers and other Texas Lawmen for court and Sunday use.
From research done by Wes Alston, an expert in Texas/Mexican border arms and armament at the turn of the centruy (1900) the fancy rigs possibly came from south of the border around that time with the Mexican cowboys who worked for Texas ranchers.
So, I have been looking for a "Pre-BBQ" rig of my own. This is a "Piteado" or "tedo" holster recently turned up in New Mexico. The decoration (embroidery style) is done with thread made from the cactus plant. This one is probably 100+ years of age. I have not decided whether to treat it with Renaissance wax or Blackrock.
Not sure what it fits. Photo shows it with a 32 top greak and a pre-19 Combat Magnum. Both Colts and S&Ws wer popular in Mexico at the time.

Renaissance Wax
I contacted a Renaissance Wax dealer (on the web) and sent an email last night about 5pm asking if the wax was safe to use on the cactus thread on this holster. The dealer replied within the hour telling me he was contacting the US distributor with my question. By 8 this morning the distributor had replied that Renaissance wax was safe on all thread used on holsters.
I found this after hours response pretty incredible.

That is good service. I would have been scared to use in on the cactus thread on that holster! I would have assumed it safe on any thread used to sew the holster together, but not on the decorative thread.

Randy, I have a Piteado rig, including belt, I believe mine is made for a 1903 Colt.
It seems pretty durable, but I used Renwax on it after I got it, and doesn't seem to have harmed at all.

Quinn, do you have the now very expensive book "Colts: From Texas and the Old West"? It is wall to Colt single actions used by Texas Rangers and lawmen. Every page has a gun or two with serial numbers and story about the guy who used them. Most are factory engraved with pearl grips. The photography is bad but the history is great.

Just a note I'm very familiar with piteado art, not specifically holsters, and the traditional fiber comes from the agave (century plant), not cactus. Beautiful holster.
