What are these ? They're made by Heiser....
I posted these years ago and had a number of guesses but no concrete answers. Since I've managed to find two of them I'd love to figure out what they were made for. All WAG's cheerfully read. Note the scallop to grab the top edge of whatever went in these and the lack of space for anything to protrude out the back of the top. Also note the marks in the leather made by the top of whatever it was. What the heck went in these ?
The Broomhandle holster is shown for size and to show how a flap goes over a pistol butt.
Thanks & regards,
turnerriver

Carrier for small diameter scope with Quick Detachable (QD) device attached to the scope, e.g. Griffin and Howe QD rings, or similar, or receiver mount, for quick attachment to rifle?

They are used to squirrel money away for your next Heiser purchase.

Are there any internal wear marks that suggest the shape of what was placed in these?
My guess would be it held a spare quick-change barrel or other accessory (as Shawn mentioned) that did not need to be rapidly accessed. Why one would carry this in a tooled fancy belt holster is another question .

We are all oriented toward thinking of something gun related, but Heiser
made a lot of knife sheaths also.

They are beautiful whatever they are!
John, what is the stitching that can be seen on the backside of the gadget? Is there something inside that the stitching held in place?

I am leaning in this direction too. Looks to me, that whatever it fits is thin.

Looks like a case made specifically for a tool of some kind, probably outdoors related, like maybe a surveying tool, or ranch tool like something for mending fences.
No matter what it is, it's nice leather!

Doc, as near as I can tell those were where the top of the belt loop either was stitched or was going to be stitched but both were then stitched with the longer belt loop. Odd that both show that stitching. That's all I can think about both of them- odd.
The other guesses are good ones, I like the outdoor tool idea. I don't think a stock would fit in them, there isn't a lot of room in them. They are obviously high end holsters, not just plain working holsters.
I hope more will be revealed.
Regards,
turnerriver

Notice the markings inside the flap of one of them, matches the grips of the Broomhandle bolt.
So: holds the full auto conversion kit for the Broomhandle Mauser, which is a different receiver and lock set from the semi-auto. Makes sense that Heiser would've configured it like the pistol's holster itself.

To us today the Broomhandle is a historical curiosity; but once it was a major handgun in the world including for the Chinese.

I'm an RPLS and collected surveying antiques for years, can't think of anything along those lines.

I think Shawn's got it right. If you imagine a smaller sized scope, perhaps for a .22, with a QD mount of some sort attached, the wear marks on the inside of the flap correspond, in both shape and size (note the curve of the 2 marks) along with location as to where a scope's eyepiece (or objective lense) would make contact with the flap when closed.

This is sort of what I had in mind. Often, in those days, the scope was mounted offset in the rings and mount so that a great deal of the tube was just hanging free in the air.
What I have shown is one type of quick detachable Griffin & Howe mount with Griffin & Howe marked holster for the scope and mount. You get the idea.

Now all we need is for turnerriver to announce the winner of his contest, and what they won :-). Maybe the pick of the litter from his magnificent holster collection?
