I try to carry it at least once a month. I carry other 2" Model 10s, so lots of holster options. I save the Myres for special occasions.

I thought I'd posted this in the past, but I can't find it, so here goes...and anyway, Photobucket would have disappointed me, and all of you, I'm just sayin'.

Stocks by The Executioner, holster by me.

Default One more from Baton Rouge, and a bit of history with it!

Here is a first year Highway Patrolman. This is a special one for me. It was given to me by my mother's father when I was in the academy. His assertion was that I not carry it until I graduated. There is a great story about how he came to have it (he was a Provost Marshal in the Army at the time) but I'll save it for another day. The Sambar Stag was my addition for the symposium, it still have the numbers matching magnas at home.

Default One more Baton Rouge symposium gun

Ok - this is a Chief's Special from 1957. The hammer was bobbed long before me and the finish shows many miles of use. I added the Tyler grip adapter. The holster and badge were a gift from a fellow LE enthusiast here on the forum (Thanks again Tony!).

I carry this J frame pretty much all the time. It gets cleaned and waxed once every two weeks. It functions beautifully despite the somewhat haggard appearance. The fancy carved holster only comes out for special occasions.

Default Keep it going boys!

Here is another from the Baton Rouge Symposium.

This little Colt hammerless in 380 is one of my favorites. When I was much younger, my mother's father carried a shiny nickel Colt in 32. When he passed, it got lost in the shuffle (swiped by step-family?). I always liked that gun and was determined that I would have one some day. My father was helping a pawn shop dispose of a large collection and this one was brought to my attention. I bought it immediately. The leather came from a local gun show. Enjoy!

The holster doesn't look very 'Myres-ey'. Is a pic of which mark is on the backside available? Not picking on your holstory, simply interested to understand more about what I'm looking at :-).

I am new to the forum and if I may impose with some questions please:

What are BBQ rigs?
Missed over half the photos because of a box that said to "update third party hosting". What is that and is there something I need to do to be able to see the photos?

Why are so many of the carved leather holster in a floral design? I have about a forty year old one like some of these that came with my S and W 547 and would like to know more about it. I was really into weapons about forty five years ago and am just getting back in again.

Thank you

Welcome back since 61. I'll take a swing at your questions.
Those who have fancy guns, holsters, belts, etc. like to show them
off, and a barbeque is a good place to do so. Never been to one myself
but I hear they are quite popular in Texas and other places.
There is nothing you can do about the pictures that turned up missing.
Apparantly the third party host wants more money and is holding the
photos hostage.
As far as carving is concerned, I have often wondered why 99% of the
carvers use the same basic design. You see something different
occasionally, but not often.
We like to see pictures. Post yours if possible.

BBQ rigs are the firearm answer to "Sunday-go-to-meetin'" clothes, as opposed to every-day clothes.
My understanding is that a lot of the floral carving originated in Mexico, and was made more popular as the "Sheridan style" of leather design in the states. Others on the forum will likely jump in with more authoritative replies!
After years of a LOT of people using Photobucket to store and upload pics to forums, they decided to charge 400 bucks now to allow you to upload your pics from Photobucket to a website. Thousands of us decided that was rude, and have stopped using them.

Apologies to the OP, but welcome to the forum!! I sometimes look around at the other gun forums, but this is in my humble opinion, one of, if not the, best on the Internet!! You came to the right place.

Now back to our regular thread.

Best Regards, Les

keith44 spl. That rig surely pleases more folks than just the user.
Some probably quite envious as well. It is a beautiful work of art.

Default The gun that started the whole thing....

Gentlemen, There is a story behind the guns that we showed at Baton Rouge. My great grandfather on my dad's side was a judge here in Texas. He carried this little gun with him to court every day, but he didn't wear it in a holster, he carried it in a leather glove. Now, I know that sounds a bit odd, but nobody ever gave it second look or thought anything of it. So, there is no leather to go with this little BBQ gun, just some great stories of 'Judge' who is somewhat of a legend in our family, and although I never met him, I know that he was quite a character!

And the story of the BBQ - Judge was quite a social creature. Well, I guess that anyone who was an elected official in those days was part of 'the boys club', and judge was not to be outdone. He had numerous BBQ's at our family's ranch in Central TX. That BBQ was the theme for our display at Baton Rouge.

Without further ado, here is the Judge's gun.

Dave - That was a great story then and it's a great story now. Having been in a couple of them snowbound elk camps back in the day, I could just about feel the cold again and see the stars when we would saddle up to ride out around 4:00 a.m. Good times. I miss 'em.

Nice, ingramite!

I suggested a BBQ gun BBQ last weekend, when an old friend brought some neighbors to me for a handgun class. I thought he'd be all over it, but nothing came of it. Maybe if I was just a few miles over the northern border, you know, Wyoming. Maybe not. Bummed. I had my elk-stag grips and custom leather holsters all primed and ready to go.

Bruce,

That is one fine combination. Did it come as a set?

I have some dried oak split in anticipation of some fine Texas BBQ this summer

Default Still kicking!

Gentlemen and Ladies,

I am glad to see that this thread is still alive and kicking. Here is a neat combo - An SD Myres jockstrap with floral carving for a 5" N Frame. It is shown here with a model of 1950 Military 44 that has been given King's sights.

The Ultimate BBQ gun & leather thread-dsc_0040_zpsdqksjixs-jpg

The Ultimate BBQ gun & leather thread-dsc_0042_zpsc0fed7jj-jpg

The holster came from a member here on the forum (thanks again sir!) and the 1950 Military 44 came from a gun show buddy who knows that I collect such things

Scot,
No, sadly it did not come as a set. The 4" Target is the gun that got me to hoarding Smiths in the first place. The holster is my first Brill, which is terribly dry rotted and the carved ivory stocks I picked up recently off ebay.

Man, there is some really great leather work here. Ya'll have me inspired to try to find my old leather tools and see if I can re-learn what I've forgotten for over 40 years. I am truly inspired by the great work I've seen here. Kinda reminds me of Keith44spl's fine gun work.

I make my own leather gear and have plenty of choices to pick from. I personally love my custom engraved Open Top though.

Here is one that you don't see every day......

Stelzig's floral carved, and background dyed for a 1911.....

The Ultimate BBQ gun & leather thread-dsc_0128-jpg

The Ultimate BBQ gun & leather thread-dsc_0129-jpg

For those unfamiliar - Stezig's is a Houston based saddle shop that also sells western wear, boots, hats, ect. They had full-time saddle makers in the past, but I can't speak to today's staffing. I would bet that their location close to the Galleria would lead them more towards clothing than saddles today.

As a Houston LEO in the early '70s, we would visit Stelzigs and look at the various leather gear available. I still have a handcuffs case I purchased there. Good quality back then.
