Default A Holster Design Question

Does anyone know the reason that virtually every belt slide type holster has the belt loops cut at an angle? The angle is sometimes sloped in opposing directions.

The angle cut is the cant of the holster...otherwise the gun would ride straight up with no forward cant. Dat's what's up with Dat.

The angled slots allow for longer slots in relation to the minimalist design of this type of holster. Perfectly vertical slots of the same length would require bigger pieces of leather.

No, the angle of the slots have no effect on the cant of the holster.

OK, but wouldn't the longer slots make the holster body less rigid?

I don't know, just asking.

The slide holster you show is a knockoff of the Black Widow I created for Bianchi, which was a development of Myres' one-piece slide, so I can give you the definitive answer: styling.

The forward slot is simply parallel to the stitching that forms the forward edge of the pocket. And the rear slot simply parallels the front one.

Various designers have chosen different approaches. My preference for the last 25 years or so has been to use a curved slot, and presently is actually a slit with a hole punched at each end. I choose to lay them first for performance, then alter that to suit my styling.

All the various bits of a holster are very interdependent, and requirements of accomodating the pistol shape can force us to tilt slots into various included angles accordingly.

Successful holster designs, look better than they work. The reverse is true, too: if it works better than it looks, sales are poor. That's the essence of what's called industrial design, which is what we are: industrial designers, who are categorised with graphic designers. Styling is important to our success.
