Default Leather holster for 642

Hey folks, I'm sure this has been beat to death but I'm trying to decide on a company for a leather iwb and owb holster for my 642. I can't afford an expensive holster right now so I've been looking at Don hume, cardini, desantis, and azula. They are all around the $30-$50 range. Anyone use these and recommend them or another company in that price range, honestly I understand quality is better at the $100 range but right now I can't do it. Thanks, Anthony

You might take a look at Lobo Gun Leather. I have several of their holsters and the quality is great and they don't break the bank on basic models.

I think you could get into an IWB offset clip and a basic pancake for a little over 100 for both and then shipping. Custom work at a good price.

I have never used an offset clip model but others on this forum swear by them.

Good luck.

If you are in Northern Ohio, Crooked River Leather Olmsted Falls. He will make a holster that will work on the belt, in the belt, and shoulder holster. All using the one holster. He is a one man Shop so it won't be fast. He is a Retired Sheriff. His prices are affordable and he will work with you.

I have Lobo Enhanced Pancakes for both J and K frames and each was well under the $100 level. An outstanding design with excellent workmanship, and reasonably quick delivery as mostly-custom products go.

I will say that the Don Hume JIT holster is a very nice package at very modest cost. I have both a black (found everywhere) and a brown (had to look a long time) one for J frames and use 'em occasionally, just to be different. So if that's all you want to spend, I'd suggest that you just look around for the best deal on product in stock - lots of places carry 'em, at varying prices.

I've been using a Side Guard Holsters Quick Clip IWB holster for the last 4-5 years with my 642 and it's worked very well for me. Good retention, but easy to draw. Stays open so re-holstering is easier. Easy-on/easy-off, but has never come off the belt without deliberately doing so. It's not that expensive, I believe around $65 now, but there is a wait. I don't know what it is currently, but you could always e-mail or call them to find out. I think mine took 8-12 weeks, or thereabouts. They also make other versions of IWB holsters with loops, clips, reinforced or non-reinforced mouths, tuckable, etc., as well as OWB holsters. I think they're some of the best values around when it comes to holsters.

Here's mine:

+1 for the LOBO Leathers offset clip IWB. I have them & LOBO pancakes for all my J frame lengths and K frame snubbies.

If you can't afford a holster at the moment, put it in your pocket. THEN save for a "REAL" holster. Something like a Galco paddle holster or such...

The Blackhawk Speed Classic should be within the budget you mentioned.
Made for a J Frame and similar. Shown with Charter Undercover.

I've owned a few Don Hume and DeSantis holsters. The Hume is probably the best bang for the buck, but both are well-fitting, well-made and durable holsters. I've also had good results with Bianchi. Find the style you like and the price point you like and pick a holster from any of the three.

I always go with Bianchi, but don't like IWB. Don't know if they make them. I used IWB for a year or so. Put on my pants one morning and the whole right side fell apart.

on Ebay you can find quite a few at very reasonable prices... even El Paso Saddlery for less than $40.00

Azula holsters made in North Carolina. Good quality and inexpensive. Look on Amazon.

A 642 is small enough for pocket carry. It's one of my frequent pocket carry rotations. Forum member snubbyfan makes a great leather pocket carry holster.

For someone who does a lot of driving or is seated often a cross draw is handy. I'm surprised that some of the old designs, like below, haven't been resurrected.

As wrangler5 said the Don Hume JIT belt slide is a good little high ride
holster for a bargain price. You can probably find 2 (a brown and black)
both for under fifty bucks. They are usually priced around 20 each.
Here are a couple of photos.
P.S. 2.25" barrel on the model 60 in the black one.
Taurus model 85 in brown one.
Your 642 would fit about like the Taurus.

I have the Don Hume JIT that I carry an older Chiefs Special and a 637 in. It's a good holster and the only OWB that I own.

I an still searching for an IWB. I will say that I have a Remora and do not like it. Won't stay put! I have a cheap Uncle Mikes IWB that I still use.

Good luck!

Desantis mini scabbard for OWB. Check Midway and Cabelas for maybe $30 something. Larry
