AZABEL or A Z Abel ?
Has anyone heard of this maker ? I got this holster with a 1955-56 4" 38/44 stuffed in it. A google search has turned up nothing. Nicely done. Hand stiched.
Seller claims to have a matching cuff case somewhere.
Stamped: AZABEL
FT WORTH TEX
MAKER

Bruce

Neither version of the name appears in "Old Cowboy Saddles & Spurs", the reference text that includes (by my calculation ) 6400 saddlemakers. From this I deduce that this chap was not a saddle maker of the old school, who also made holsters; but from the new school of holster-makers only. The slanted style of marking is so similar to that of another Ft. Worth maker (who nevertheless used individual letters for his stamps, for some unknown reason, because stamps are cheap) that we know as O. Ball (Oliver Ball). He operated in the Fifties.
Yours is nicely hand-carved and I would have said Myres if I hadn't seen the backside, or even Lawrence. The external styling is very fluid and professional, as is the workmanship. A keeper IMO! It does everything the classic threepersons does despite the guard resting in a pocket vs on the end of the welt.

Thank you, Red and Jorge.
I never even considered A. Zabel.
Looks like there is a passel of Zabels in Ft. Worth.
The Leather Workers Journal, Volume 6, January 1903, The United Brotherhood Leather Workers Horse Goods, lists an A. Zable & Sons in Ft. Worth.

Bruce

Well done! Albert Zabel is listed as Ft. Worth 1901-20 (bearing in mind that this same book's Brill dating is proven incorrect). I do wish I had a version of this book that was organised by city/state, too!
The book I used as a reference states "with some of the following makers we could only verify a brief date of operation, although they may have been in business before or after those years". Example: we absolutely know that August Brill was working as a clerk (he was never listed as a leather worker in city directories or census documents) for saddler W.T. Wroe & Sons in Austin into the mid 19teens, yet the book states "August W Brill, Austin TX 1890s." August wasn't in operation himself until circa 1915 (perhaps by buying out William Wroe in accordance with the custom of the time).
Your holster being so very, very close to a Myres, and both being in Texas, Zabel may very well have influenced Myres' work.

Reason: duplicate comment about threepersons styles
