Default IWB that I made for a friend

Tell me what y'all think. Second holster I ever made. This one turned out very nice I think. I used a vinegaroon to dye it black which is the coolest thing ever.

Nice holster.
Vinegaroon is pretty cool. The iron in the vinegar solution reacts with the tannin in the leather and turns it black.
Just make sure you got it well neutralized.

It was in the roon for 20 seconds and then into a baking soda/water bath for 45 seconds so hopefully that was enough.

Absolutely! I love doing this. I may charge for materials....But that isn't much.

This friend sent me a streamlight TLR-1.

Nice job. Did you use a pronged chisel to punch your stitching holes? What was the spacing, if I may ask?

Thanks.

Very cool and great looking. I've done a little leather work, possible bag leadball pouch. It is a fun hobby. Wonder if a civilian can get there hands on one of those forms of the particular gun you'd want to make a holster for. I'd like to try a scabbard type.

Thank you.

Google 'blue guns' , they make the best ones....But they aren't cheap. $40-50 for a handgun mold and $100+ for rifle/shotgun....But they are exact replicas

What is the advantage of using "vinegaroon" instead of regular leather dye?

84Carrera, you don't need a "blue gun" to make a holster. You can use the actual gun for a pattern.

Actual black leather dye is very difficult to use. It tends to rub off for a very long period of time....From what I have heard. So since the first thing that I was going to dye black was going to be sent to a friend 3 states away, I didn't want to risk it.

There are downsides to vinegaroon, if you don't neutralize it with baking soda the leather will eventually fall apart from the acetic acid, but that only happens if the vinegaroon hasn't matured enough.

Basically put steel wool in white vinegar until the steel wool stops disappearing. I've got 5 steel wool pads in this half gallon of vinegar and it will probably eat one more.

Glad that was explained. As a non leather work kinda guy, I thought we were talking about making dye from the arachnid called a vinegaroon or false scorpion.

I like it very much.

Questions for you -

Can you do that for revolvers and pistols?

Can you cant it a little more?

Interesting to know. It's very cool with the red stitching.

Do I understand you have a tool to punch holes in the leather and then stitch by hand? Nicely done.

Yes, I use 3 tools for stitching actually. I use a diamond stitching chisel for the correct spacing and then I use a diamond awl to punch all the way through before I hand stitch. I usually punch 5-8 holes and then stitch them and repeat.
