Default WHY HUME & NOT MYRES?

A while back I posted an epistle on this forum titled:
2 BORDER PATROL HOLSTERS

If you haven't read it you should, for background on this question.

Many makers were copying Bill Jordan's Border Patrol holster,
and some were not very great quality, so he (Bill) had his
name trademarked so they could not associate his name with
their sub-quality products.

Then he (Bill) gave the exclusive right to the use of his
trademark to Don Hume. Not Sam Myres. I wonder why.
Does anyone know?

I think timing had something to do with it as well. The S.D. Myres Co. went through a couple of owners after leaving the family, the perception and actuality may have been a waning company vs. an up and comer-Hume.

That makes sense John. I will look a little more
closely at the time lines. Thank you.

John I think timing actually had a lot to do with it. Here is a brief
time line:

1941 Bill Jordan has his Border Patrol "proto-type" made by C. H.
Werner dba Alpine Saddlery in Alpine, Texas.

After carrying the holster through WWII it was well worn and beat up,
so when Bill returned he had Sam Myres build him another one. This
was probably 1945.

Myres put the holster in his catalog and it sold like hot cakes. Many
other makers made versions and some of them even called it the
Jordan Border Patrol. This probably went on through most of the
1950s.

Sam Myres passed away in 1953.

Meanwhile, Bill Jordan was recalled to the Marines for the Korean War.
I don't know how long Bill was gone, but the War was 1950 - 1953.

Meanwhile Don Hume was in the Navy 1948 -1952. While in the Navy
he did leather work for a hobby. When he got out of the Navy he
went in to law enforcement in Southern California. Then started to
make holsters part-time in his garage.

It was during this time that Don became acquainted with Bill Jordan.
Bill was not pleased with all those making his Border Patrol style
holster. Some even using his name. So, sometime between 1953
and 1960, Bill registered his trade mark and gave Don Hume the exclusive
right to use his trade mark. Don left law enforcement and went full time
into the hoster business in 1960.
