IDAHO LEATHER
Back on January 9th of this year I posted on this forum the news
that Ben Wetzel, proprietor of Idaho Leather, had passed away.
Not knowing the future of Idaho Leather, or if there will be a
future, I wished I had one of Ben's holsters. He made me a
shoulder holster, many years ago, for my Walther PPK when I
thought I was James Bond.
But I traded the PPK and so I sold the holster.
Well, as the Chinese Philosopher said: "You can sit with your
mouth open for a long, long, time, waiting for a roast duck
to fly in".
So I quit wishing and went surfing on the big old bay.
Here's what I found. After a brief bidding war it was mine, and
it came today. Shown with my Colt 1911 .45 ACP.

I really like Eubanks/Idaho Leather holsters. They may not get quite as much attention as Heiser, Myres and a couple of the other big names but they're pure Americana and quality goods. It helps that they're often found with laced edges, like yours, something I particularly like.

I have several Eubanks holsters, but just yesterday picked up my first Idaho Leather. Supposed to fit a 6 inch N frame. Don't have it in hand yet, but I think I will like it.

I do like your jokes Phil :-). Surely your new holster is for a .22 auto?
Seeing the lacing reminds that I saw a post on a Facebook holster forum wondering what leather to use for lacing holsters; nothing seemed to be tough enough. Plenty of suggestions including kangaroo (which is famously used as lacing) and I had to mention that the tough leather used for holster lacing is rawhide. As in 'raw hide', wetted until it's soft, then laced, then when dry as hard as a nylon toothbrush handle.

That is a beauty Bruce. Looks like new. However, I don't
think it was made for a revolver. I believe it was made for
a semi-auto with a 6" barrel, like maybe a Browning
Challenger? The LS means laced and stamped (basket weave).
Let us know when you receive it, OK?

Yes Red, I believe it was made for something like a Hi Standard
HB. The stamped info is 66LS. The LS means laced and stamped (basket weave). Down below the Idaho Leather it
says RA. Rimfire Auto? The seller said it was for a 1911 and
it does fit. Kinda.
Actually I had a Hi-Standard a long time ago. Think it was HB or HD.
This just proves we should never get rid of a gun.

Even without the stamping it's obviously for a DA revolver. With the stamping, I would expect Combat Masterpiece or Combat Magnum 6 inch, which are K frames. Proportions would seem to be right for the K vs an N. The brand is reasonably contemporary, and included as a for us is that it is stamped with complete info vs just the brand plus a few pen marks. The sewn in rear sight ledge, as used by Lawrence, indicates adjustable sights (extra cost option and not needed on the M&P models).

Phil's holster marked RA is likely for a Ruger Automatic, which at the time would have been the .22 Standard/Mark-series pistols.

Thanks Red,
I have to admit those were my first thoughts on the "CM". Only flaw in that theory is that the Combat guns are 4".
Colt Magnum maybe ?

Thanks DB for that interpretation. Ruger Automatic does
make sense. My attorney, who taught the legal part of
my enhanced license classes, shot an older Ruger Auto.
They would shoot 100 rounds at various distances and in
various positions. Shooting at 9" paper pie plates. She was
one of the few who scored 100%. I might have to give her
this Idaho Leather holster.

Just thought I would try another photo to see if I can do any better.
A little better, but I still need to learn about better lighting.

Phil, it looks like you might just need to use a flash for the photos.

Much better, now you just need to improve your aiming of the camera/flash. Just like shooting a gun.

I tried again, aimed a little better, and elevated the upper part of
the gun a little bit where it was dark last time.
Not much better, but a little bit? I'll keep practicing.

Phil--Thanks so much for starting this thread and your thoughts. It brings back great memories. My grandfather was a working man and owned two guns his entire life--at Colt 32-20 Army Special and an old Fox double.
He carried his Colt in a Eubanks holster. I took a break from the AR v. KY game to pull the set out and photograph it. Sorry for the ipad photos.

John, that's a great old gun and because your grandfather carried it in that holster, that's the holster that belongs with the gun but in case you didn't know, the "45A" stamp on the backside denotes 45 Automatic which back then meant the now famous 1911 pistol.

It was my grandfather's from 1916. I will be damned--I had no idea! I will try my 1911 in the holster. Grandpa was the kind of guy he probably just tried the holster, it fit ok, so he bought it! I never thought to ask him about the holster, he just always used it. He carried it for so long it is molded to the gun now. I store them side-by-side in the top of my safe.

It's like the Idaho Leather I've posted here. It was made for a Ruger
Mark whatever, but the .45 Auto squeezes in. I tried my Model 10
revolver just for chuckles and it fits ok too, except the safety strap
would need to be a little longer. Red Nichols pointed out to me that
the 1911 will fit in the Threepersons N frame revolver holster. That's
the kind of stuff that's interesting. You can find out something every
day on here.
And thanks again -db- for the mini photography class.

Even the marking unnecessary to tell us it's an auto holster :-).

Mr. Nichols/others --can you tell if the holster is of the same era/time-frame as the Colt revolver? I can't help but wonder if my Grandfather ordered at the same time as his revolver and perhasp because his revolver is an "Army Special" if they did not order the 1911 holster which was the new Army sidearm.

Not very fancy, but the cartridge belt is from the Idaho Leather Company, Boise Idaho. My only piece of leather from this source:
Here's the stamp:

I remember that rig Les. It may not be fancy, but it is Hell

If I were you, I'd start asking family if Grandpa ever had an old automatic pistol they may have forgotten about or that someone else put away.

It is the obvious question, isn't it? Yet the revolver pre-dates the holster by a LOT. I have the actual facts in my files (somewhere) but because neither Idaho nor Eubanks had much effect on the development of holsters -- OK, none at all, their holster styles all being originated by other companies like Heiser then Colorado Saddlery then Hunter and then copied by everyone else including Bucheimer -- I've committed very little about what I know about them to memory. What I do recall is Idaho being a sort of successor to Eubanks and beginning around 1970? But certainly not back to the origin of your Colt :-). Someone else, like Phil, will know better than I about dating an Idaho Leather holster.
I could imagine your grandfather being happy to carry his Colt in that by simply running across it at a shop, poking his revolver into the holster, and declaring it a 'fit'. The threeepersons style was getting up a head of steam by the 1930s (that's effectively what your grandfather had 'created' by carrying his DA in that auto holster) and it could have looked quite natural to him, esp. since the strap fits :-). But looooong after the gun was made.

John, Grandpa's holster was made by Eubanks sometime between 1939
and 1949. From 1949 - 1954 the mark would say Eubanks Pioneer Leather, not just Eubanks. From 1954 there was both a Eubanks Pioneer
and Idaho Leather. Idaho Leather survived up until this past December
when the proprietor Mr. Wetzel passed away. Eubanks Pioneer Leather ceased several years back.

That's a beautiful specimen C&L. Their lacing, in particular,
has stood up to the test of time better than any other I have
seen. What are the model numbers, 77?

I was a little mixed up on my #1 post on this thread. Ben is the son,
who passed away at 77 in December 2016. Bud was the Dad, long gone.
I edited #1 accordingly. Sorry.

I am a big fan of the Eubanks & Idaho Leather brand holsters. The model codes on the backs are pretty easy to figure out thankfully.
Here is a nice set with a seldom seen belt slide accessory, the holster is marked CSNF on the rear. You don't see a lot in this chocolate color, most are russet color. The Ruger holster is marked R6 on the rear.

I came across one simply marked PIONEER COMPANY BOISE, IDAHO.
That's a maker's mark I had not seen before. I'm thinking perhaps
when Eubanks went back into business, as Idaho Leather, after
expiration of his non compete agreement, maybe Pioneer was not too
happy about it, so they dropped his name from the mark.
BTW I found out that Pioneer ceased doing business in 1972.

Fits an N frame perfectly. I don't have a 6" N yet, but 5" slips in like it was made for it.

I finally got chance to try my Grandfather's 1939-49 Eubanks holster with a 2012, 1911! Amazing fit. I would carry the 1911 in it without hesitation. Truly astounding for an almost 70 year old piece of craftsmanship. 2017 and still going strong.

This is my only Eubanks and it is one of my favorites. Made for a 6 1/2" .44 S&W. Could someone date this holster ( time frame ) when it was Eubanks Pioneer Leather, Boise Id.?
Bill
I guess I should have read crazyphil's post on makers marks and history. I assume then, that my holster was built sometime between 1950 and 1972.

^^^^Beautiful combo! And at least you have the right gun in yours. I had always thought until this thread my grandfather's holster was for a 32-20 Colt Army Special. One would think the "45A" on the back would have given me pause, but that would be giving me too much credit! That was the holster grandpa always carried the 32-20 in so I just assumed it was the correct holster.

bruce 5781: Your beautiful Idaho Leather holster has a mark
on the back CM. That means it was made for a Combat Magnum,
S&W Model 19 & 66.
With thanks to SG-688 for the Idaho Leather size chart he posted today.
