Holster questions

First post, so I am racking my brain searching on which way to go with a conceal holster and which one to get. I just bought my first conceal carry gun, 1st gun owned, it is a shield .45. I am trying to figure out IWB or OWB, winter time I will have no problem with OWB as I always wear a jacket, summer time I wear cargo shorts and normally large, non tight t-shirts. I have looked at all types and brands of holsters even the ccw breakaways pants and shorts. I like the alien gear cloak 3 and I like the price, my friend uses the stealth gear onyx but 100 bucks is pretty steep but they are nice. The ccw breakaways are like 90 bucks each. Any help would really be appreciated, I just don't want to waist my money on something I won't like that is kind of why I liked the OWB as it would be more comfortable. I am retired military and when I was active in uniform I carried a fs92 in an OWB police triple retention type holster and it was comfortable. Thanks in advance for all you help.

Been using the Alien Gear Cloak Tuck for a couple of years, and like it a lot.

It's got a free trial period, so no loss if it's not your cup of tea.

Get a good holster belt, as part of the carry system. For reference, I use a Galco SB2.

For what it's worth, I have an Alien Gear Cloak Mod (OWB). I'm using a S&W 9VE as a carry gun. I'm in Mass here, so concealed carry is a MUST! I find it sits high enough on my belt so it's easily concealed. As it happens, I personally prefer cross draw with this holster (I wear it on my left side, draw right hand). I believe it's more concealable this way. A nice feature on the AG holsters is you can adjust the height and cant of the holster to your liking. Nice feature I think. I'm a little apprehensive about summertime carry because I ride a motorcycle, and I'm imagining a t shirt flying up and revealing too much....I'm going to have to experiment with that and figure out away to keep the gun concealed....big trouble here if you don't! Many years ago, I always used a shoulder rig, but if you go that route, make sure and get a really good one! Anything less is going to physically punish you and you won't want to carry. Might want to look at Alien Gear, Crossbreed, Old Faithful, and others along the same line....Personally I have 3 AG IWB and one OWB for the Shield 45, a Shield 9 and a Glock 26..... but for everyday carry I use the Foxx holster for AIWB...most comfortable and stable.

Don't need nuthin' fancy. Just get yourself a good belt and a pancake holster.

All sounds real good, my friends here that carry in CT keep telling me it is to hard to conceal with an OWB, I think I would prefer an OWB alien gear because here in CT it is still legal to open carry so if I show it would not be a big deal. I did look at the CCW breakaways pants and I just don't know if the gun would bounce around in the pocket alot. I think I need to try a couple on, both IWB and OWB, I just think I would be more comfortable with OWB maybe carried at 3 oclock position.

I never tried one, but I've seen the demo videos. They 'might' work ok while standing, but I can't believe they'd be too comfortable while sitting/driving. I don't now about you guys but there's not room for two tools down there!

I hear ya on the no room down there, I was also worried about the sitting and driving while using that holster.

I've been using the $29 and $39 IWB versions of High Noon Holsters for years. They've got fancier ones, but their low end ones have suited me fine. Good quality and great company. I mainly carry a CS9, a 5906, and a J-frame. I've used them with jeans, with shorts, even without a belt (though they are made to hook around a belt).

A lot will depend on what type of body you have. Small waist and athletic, you have it made.

One of my most comfortable OTW holsters is a DeSantis Mini Scabbard that I picked up on sale. It disappears under a jacket, windbreaker and even some shirts. I frequently forget I am carrying my 9mm Shield when using it.

If you are carrying a few extra pounds around the middle you will want to make sure you get one that has a body shield. They are somewhat hard to find and frequently sold out. Taqua makes the EP-BH2 1012, JSG Gunleather and D.M.Bullard (Bodyguard & Slide) are others. I am trying to decide right now on either a Bullard or JSG.

Good luck. Be prepared because unless you are extremely lucky you will be like the rest of us and end up with a drawer or two, three full of holsters.

I bought three Alien Gear Cloke tucks about 3/4 years ago. They are great for concealed carry. I carry a Colt Defender with no problem and I believe it's heavier than the Shield. The important thing is getting a good gun belt. Mine is from The Belt Man and I wear it every day. The AG has a great return policy, plus, if you sell your gun and get another, they will trade you for a new shell. Plus there is no break in period. Comfortable right from the start.

The grips don't dig in. There is a sweat shield between the grips and your skin. I ware mine in the summer with a t shirt untucked. No problem.

I have been using a pocket holster for my 9mm Shield. Works well in cargo shorts but will be looking at all of the options when I go the the NRA annual meeting in Atlanta next month. I also want to look at the ones that look like a cell phone case on your hip.

OWB is the way to go.
Consider changing you dress mode.
Summer wear: add a light weight vest to your T shirt and cargo shorts.

Totally agree on the DeSantis Mini Scabbard OWB in leather. Just got mine today and carrying a Shield PC 9mm. Had been using a kydex IWB. Much more comfortable with the DeSantis. I'm of small stature (5'10", 160lb) so this may make a difference.

The bigger the holster is and the more that is against you the hotter it will be in the heat of summer ..

look at the Garrett Industries GX .. its a kydex shell with a leather back .. has a very good large single clip and can be worn IWB from appendix to 5 very comfortably .. they also have the Silent Thunder series of Holsters you might be interested in ..

No I haven't. I don't think they had one then. It was about 4 years ago. But if they have a guarantee, I wouldn't have a problem using theirs.
