Default Help me find this holster.

I am looking for a OWB holster with a thumb break for a 442, but I do not want belt loops, I want two metal or polymer clips. I am also left handed. I know this will most likely have to be a custom job, but thats OK. This is for field carry.

Thank you for helping.

The hammerless/concealed hammer/shrouded hammer revolver designs came into being because of a demand for small revolvers that could be carried in a pocket or purse and withdrawn without a hammer spur to snag on anything. Essentially, the impetus of these designs creates some limitations for suitable holsters.

Traditional thumb-break designs do not work very well with the hammerless/shrouded hammer designs like your S&W 442. Without an exposed hammer there is very little for the retention strap to engage as a means of retention.

The 442 (and similar designs) can be outfitted with holsters featuring a retention strap over the back side of the trigger guard, which can provide positive retention. However this will work only on revolvers not equipped with oversized grips (grips that take up considerable space forward of the grip-frame and behind the trigger guard), which seem to be the more popular styles over recent years.

For field use, as you have mentioned, you might do well to consider a holster with full or partial flap, providing both positive retention and added protection for the revolver.

Best regards.

I have a couple of paddle style OWB holsters that I like. Why are you set on two polymer/metal clips? IMHO, the paddles work fine.

My thought is that the OP is wanting a holster he can put on or take off without having to remove his belt. I know that was kind of obvious, so moving on.The problem with clips (type used on call phone cases) is they are designed for a maximum belt width. If you get ones made for no more than a 1" belt and suddenly the belt width you want to wear is 1.25" the retention is lost. Another concern is will the width of the back side of the holster be sufficient to accommodate two clips? The idea of a flapped/partial flapped, paddle style OWB holster is very intriguing. It covers everything: ease of use, gun retention and it protects the stocks/grips and the gun. Hummmmmm. hardcase60

Let me explain what the holster will be used for. It will be used when I am scouting and preparing trees for tree stand hunting in PA. The clips are for not removing my belt, for on & off. OWB, because some of the scouting will be during the summer and it will be hot, this is also why I do not want pocket carry. I need some type of retention, thumb break, strap, flap. I would like something light since the gun is so light weight.
I am still welcome to comments and suggestions.
