Smile Yaqui Style Holster

Hi:
I ordered a M1911 holster and without looking closely at the photo, when I opened the package discovered that it is a Yaqui style belt slide !

I have not used this style holster since 1975 when I was transferred to a CDI unit and was issued one. On a stakeout I kept moving around in the car seat until I heard a "Thump" and discovered that the seat arm rest had pushed the weapon up and out of the holster (no restraining strap).

Question: with the barrel / slide un-protected by the holster, will the this cause damage to the barrel / slide weapon ?

Thanks,
Jimmy

I sometimes carry a Glock 30S in a Yaqui slide.

The holster itself won't damage the pistol.

But if you keep bumping into stuff or scraping the gun on abrasive objects like brick walls or rough timbers, yeah, your pistol will get some damage.

It'll also depend on whether you carry your pistol under a jacket or in an OWB holster in open carry mode. The more exposed your pistol is in a Yaqui, the greater chance for scratches and dings.

DeSantis makes a kinda neat little holster called the Mini-Scabbard. I have a couple of them. They're relatively inexpensive. They sorta remind me of a Yaqui slide that's been stretched to cover the lower part of the pistol. It holds the gun securely with a tension screw.

I occasionally use a Yaqui slide type holster built for me by Matt Delfatti for my 1911's.

Since I always wear a cover garment (sports jacket, cardigan sweater, jacket etc) when using this holster, I have no concerns that the exposed slide/barrel will be damaged.

Of course, this isn't a holster I use while bushwhacking in the Colorado mountains.

I carried a PMR 30 in a Yaqui slide and the fiber optic front sight war broken during carry doing outside work. I think the slide is a good option but since it exposes the lower slide and front sight, I prefer a holster that protects that sight. But for casual carry, it's a decent holster.

I too had problems with the gun being pushed up and out of the slide.

I didn't use it long enough to damage the gun.

They seem like a good idea if you have guns like 6906 and 5906....or LOL Glocks.... same gun with different barrel lengths........have a couple..... in the Big Box-O-Holsters........

they are OK for guns like the 3913 or 6906 or a Walther PPK where the slide doesn't come close to the car seat or office chair.

That said...............haven't used one in years.

My wife uses one on at the range, they work fine for us as a range/target shooting holster. I wouldn't use it as a carry holster in and out of autos or anywhere else you need to protect the finish or where you need to hold it more securely. For us it has a specific time and place and it works in those situations.

One advantage of the Agent 9 style belt slide over the Yaqui slide type -- tightening the belt tightens the holster on the pistol. Plus, some Agent 9 styles have retention straps. Don't recall seeing one on a Yaqui.

All the other problems remain. Once had a dog run around me, wrapping his chain around the slide and frame of my Mdl. 39 in an Agent 9.
