holster recommendation for 4" model 19?
Well I took an old 19-3 .357 to the range today and it's my new favorite gun. It earned a holster. I don't want to wait months for a custom job. What's a good quality holster recommendation? This would be for carry while hiking in the woods or out in the field while shooting on a friends property. Not sure if I'd want IWB or OWB. I don't even know if it's concealable...

I use a Don Hume spring holster for OC for my model 64, not a CC by any means though. For my GP100 I use a Don Hume border patrol. I like the leather duty holsters, but they are hard to find. For concealing a good pancake should be up to the task. I also have a Bianchi shoulder holster for the model 64, very comfortable holster.

IMO, all the holsters mentioned are good, with me having more experience with the Cyclone than the others listed. You are uncertain about IWB/OWB but for hiking, I'd go with OWB. And I'm assuming you prefer leather but IMO, kydex has a place in the holster world. Lotsa good ones to choose from.

Lobo Gunleather makes a great holster and one of my personal favorites is my Kramer belt scabbard.

PS. I think I would make some decisions as to what you DO and DON'T want for features and then refine your search.

I use an old S&W holster to roam around the ranch with my 19.
Ebay has quite a few serviceable holsters to fit the bill for ya till you can decide on something else

This old Bucheimer Plainsman would work well, if you want a cross-draw.

If this really is you favorite sidearm, spend a little money and wait a little time for an El Paso Saddlery " Three persons" holster and matching belt. A fine weapon deserves fine leather. Also check with Doc Barranti for his designs. From these folks, you get what you pay for.

I agree with usmc2427765. Take a little time and spend a little more
and you will be much happier long term.
Here below left is an El Paso Saddlery Threepersons with safety strap.
2nd from left is a Barranti Brill style with "dog ear"
3rd from left another good choice Mike Taurisano's Ranger model
4th from left an Oliver Ball I picked up on ebay for fifty bucks
5th is a modern Jordan Border Patrol by Hume
I would also suggest you look here on this forum in the accessories
for sale section. rbbt usually has an extensive list of pre-owned
holsters and very reasonable prices.

One of my favorites....hiking, riding a ATV or SXS.....followed by the #5BHL.
I'm 5'9" 170 and I can and sometimes do conceal a 4" 19 in a Milt Sparks Summer Special. Not my favorite CC;I prefer a 3" K-frame or 2 1/2" 19/66 in that role.

The only time that I open carry is at the range where I shoot PPC. Not the best holster for PPC, but I like the features for an off the shelf holster, I prefer the Bianchi 5BHL. I use one for my Colt Trooper MKIII (4"), and I am quite comfortable with it.

Bianchi, Safariland and Bucheimer offered a number of excellent OWB holsters that would fit the bill for field carry and date to the Model 19 period. You shouldn't have much trouble finding a good condition vintage holster for under $50 either here on S&W or Ebay.

Excellent advice here ! Muster up a little patience and go with a fine El Paso Three persons , or one of their other classic holsters....You Will Not Regret It...trust me!
For the price Bianchi are serviceable, but they are now made in Mexico and not the quality they used to be...
El Paso are top shelf .
