How to salvage an old holster?
I have a few old holsters that are pretty hard and wonder if there is something other than saddle soap and or neatsfoot or mink oil to use on them. I live in a desert environment so stiff dry leather is way more common than rotted leather. I don't think anything can make them like new again but maybe there is a way to help them out a little?

Saddle soap & neatsfoot oil are still around because they work.
If they're clean, just the neatsfoot oil should be sufficient. If not, clean with saddle soap and after dry, do the neatsfoot.

American Made Leather Care Since 1976
This is great stuff. It really brings new life to old leather.

The weak point will be the threads. I brought a few leather holsters back to life but the threads disintegrated. Best to have a shoe guy run new thread through it.

I've just restitched a few of them by hand. Needles and proper thread at Hobby Lobby for a few dollars. I just used the same holes. Watched a youtube video to get an idea how to start and finish it. Several different stitches you can use.

I wanted to but my dad yelled at me. Told me sewing is women's work. I didn't tell my shoe guy that 😉

Ordered some of the Blackrock stuff to give a try. I have a ton of old leather that can use some TLC. Lot of old military rifle slings and such too. Not just holsters.

If the color is black or brown good old Kiwi Shoe Polish works wonders without softening up the leather like oil or soap will. Most of the really old holster (as nostalgic as they are) are not up to the modern day designs, manufacturing methods and materials. I do wear Dad's (no longer with us) old holster on Fathers Day or his Birthday as sort of a remembrance but they just aren't up to a high quality modern rig when you get right down to it.

Yes and it helped. Not a miracle cure but I don't think that exists for leather that has been neglected for too long. I also found it does almost work miracles on some tough dry skin on my knee! Worth it for that. Nothing has worked as well on THAT trouble spot. Leather of sorts I suppose. (-:}
