Probably for a 4" N-Frame, like a .38-44 Heavy Duty.

The holster being that old, for police, marked 38 and too big for a K-frame leaves only 2 other options- it's for either a S&W N-frame or a Colt E-/I-frame.

Any other markings on the back side? Maker's mark, etc.? U.S. made?

I seriously doubt that a four inch N frame would fit. No room for a shrouded barrel.

38 4 meant k frame in 4", 'back in the day'. Show us the backside, we may be able to help you with the manufacturer based on the construction details.

Default bra

It looks about right for a Colt Police Positive or PPS but if that was what it was for a Cobra should fit okay.

Too small for an N-frame but too big for a K means Colt E/I, likely an Official Police model.
