Since you are from NC, support the home grown state owned business and get one from Wild Bill's Concealment. They are a family owned business in Garner NC, and they make great stuff.

They advertise made to order items with a delivery time of 8-10 weeks, but I've never had an MTO item take more than 3 weeks to land on my door step and it's usually around 2 weeks. I spoke with the owner about it and he agreed it was probably costing sales, but his wife likes to under promise and over deliver since she'd have to handle any late delivery complaints.

This shows each side of their Covert Carry holster the top one with a 3" J-frame and the bottom one with a 3" K-frame The offset clip keeps the profile thin, and the wide area of the holster is very comfortable even with a 36-40 oz revolver, provided you use a good carry belt.

The design is also tuckable so it works well with a dress shirt. The mouth is double thickness with a polymer strip sandwiched in between so the holster stays open in side the waist band when the revolver is removed, and the lip won't roll under and intrude into the trigger guard.

The use a natural leather finish to avoid the need for any wax. They start out rather pale but quickly take on the tanned color of the one on the top.

Being an lframe, look around for a 2.5in 686 holster that you like. Most should be 100% compatible

I've wanted a 9mm revolver from time to time but never long enough or hard enough to make it happen.

On the one hand, I like the idea of ammunition compatibility with various 9mm pistols.

On the other hand, it doesn't offer much advantage for real world purposes, other than having a shorter case that will fully eject with the short ejector rod found on the 2.5" revolver, and the ability to use moon clips for faster re-loading, and that's not really much of a real world concern either.

It's the ballistics that I am still curious about.

For example, 9mm Luger will give you 1,150 fps with a 124 gr bullet in a 4" revolver with no herculean efforts. On the other hand, I already get 1,051 fps on average with my preferred 125 gr +P load and 1,296 fps on average with my preferred 125 gr .357 Magnum load in my 2 1/2" 686+ and my 2 1/2" Model 66-4.

I also don't know that I'd get an honest 1,150 fps with a 124 gr 9mm in a S&W 986 given the comparatively long throat (although they've minimized that a bit by using a shorter cylinder) and the cylinder gap before it reaches what is only a 2.5" barrel. I suspect it won't do any better velocity wise than my current .38 +P load. If so, all the 986 would really offer is a shorter ejection stroke and the ability to use moon clips that are slightly faster than speed loaders.

If you've got a chronograph I'd be interested in seeing what you are getting for actual velocity with various loads.
