Default Counter CarJacking Rig: Mitch Rosen

By now it's obvious I've always had a "thing" for fine leather products, especially those designed to carry pistols. As much as I like the "Finely Made" aspect, it was always secondary to the "practical function" aspect. The holster had to work very well in the field. It had to be reliable, durable, and serve a practical purpose.

In light of that I'll share my favorite "behind-the-wheel" rig of all time. Enter my 20 year old Counter Carjacking Rig from Mitch Rosen, known in the business simply as the CCR (not to be confused with my favorite music of a far earlier era).

The CCR is a *specific purpose* holster for use during extended periods of driving and/or sitting behind-the-wheel. It's worn outside the waistband in the cross-draw position between 9 and 10 o'clock. It's comfortable, practical, and FAST. The retention is amazing. After 20 years it still maintains a vise-like grip, yet provides nanosecond access.

The CCR is easy on/easy off, as it should be, with a strong single snap belt loop. The profile is thin but very rigid. The generous sight track is as strong as they come.

The CCR is designed to be kept in a vehicle's console/glove compartment. For extended wheel time, you make the quick switch of your pistol from your edc holster to the CCR. Your edc holster remains in place attached to you. When exiting you simply remove the CCR and place your pistol back in your edc holster. Remember, the specific purpose of the CCR is all about comfort, access, and SPEED when seated behind-the-wheel for an extended period of time while keeping your pistol attached to you. To that purpose it's excellent.

I'm always reading about reports of "leather fatigue" in leather holsters where holsters begin to fail in function, reach the end of their lifespan, and therefore become either useless or dangerous (fatigued leather creeping into the trigger guard for example), or both, and must be discarded. My personal experience with "leather fatigue" is it's rampant in cheaply made holsters, and I've never once experienced it with products from the best makers. Case in point, after 20 years my CCR shows ZERO signs of "leather fatigue".

Maintenance? The only thing I've ever done is wipe it down inside and out with a silicone cloth.

If you like the idea of having a specific driving/road trip rig that is amazingly comfortable, as well as practical, take a hard look at the CCR from Mitch Rosen. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I also think it's pretty damn good looking too.

"Use only when seated in vehicle."

I don't suppose they make one for when you're seated somewhere other than in a vehicle?

Yes the CCR is most definitely for "use only when seated in vehicle".

If you're interested in a crossdraw holster that's functional for general use, as well as extended periods of sitting, you may want to look at the "Transverse" and "Upper Limit" from Mitch Rosen.

Good Luck, Stay Safe.

Nice........how is it if you need to get out for gas/potty break/quick meal?????

I've been using Kirkpatrick's Leather TCD (Texas cross draw) for a PC Shorty9 ( or 6906/6904) for the past few years when I'm going to be driving for a stretch....... also have one for my Beretta Compact/Centurion/Type M....they conceal well under a flannel lined LL Bean Shirt, vest or square tailed "fishing Style" shirt

For a QUICK in and out I'll just conceal it. If I'm locking and walking away from my vehicle I'll switch back to my edc. The CCR is fast on/fast off.

Great, yes, Ive always liked cross draw for driving.

I agree, cross draw when driving is the way to go. I don't always practice that but I should. I have an El Paso Saddlery cross draw rig for an N frame; it's kind of large but the gun is easy to get to and if it is not hot out easy to conceal under a jacket.

I was a young FBI agent in New Orleans on a violent crime task force when carjacking was made a federal offense in 1992. I worked a bunch of them.

I never had one where the carjack happened with the driver behind the wheel. They all occurred as the driver walked up to the car.

Criminals may not be the smartest kids on the block, but they know you can just depress the long skinny pedal on the right as they stroll up to your car.

I know there are instances where a thug yanks someone out from behind the wheel, usually after they get jammed up in a police chase. Those are pretty rare. If you are really concerned about resisting a carjacking, have your pistol discretely in your hand as you approach your car.

A friend of mine was a victim of an attempted carjacking as he and his pregnant wife walked up to their car in a parking lot. A young guy stuck a gun in his face and took his keys. The carjacker got in the car, started it, and when he used his gun hand to put it in gear my buddy shot him a bunch of times with his Sig 226.

Thanks for your input, and Thanks for your service.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the model name. I'm sure that was done to be an eyecatching marketing and sales attraction. Marketing hype aside, it's a well made product.

All your points are great, however, the single, specific design purpose for the CCR is for *extreme comfort* and *easy, fast access* to a pistol when *seated* "behind the wheel" for extended periods of time.

Other modes of OWB carry when driving can be quite uncomfortable on long trips, and/or make access to the pistol slow or a bit difficult. People then tend to put the pistol in the console, glove compartment, under the seat, etc. The CCR assures that if your pistol is suddenly and unexpectedly needed, it's attached to you. For it's narrow, specific purpose the cross draw design of the CCR works perfectly.

P.S. When returning with the Mrs to our vehicle, my wife holds my left hand while my strong hand is "discretely" inside my front right pocket with a full combat grip on a S&W Snub that's riding in a pocket holster.
