Default A BUNCH OF "DOG EARS"

Several years ago I was obsessed with "dog ear" holsters, so I
started collecting them. After a while, I realized that almost
every maker made the design. Here are some of them.

1st left clockwise, starting at upper left,
Wally Wolfram's Wolf brand, Wally's Blazer
brand, Heiser, Smith & Wesson, & Heiser again.

2nd from left clockwise starting in upper left, Lawrence Special Agent, Lobo, Shipley, and Oliver Ball.

3rd from left clockwise starting in upper left, Safariland, Bianchi, Rybka,
Myres and Brauer Bros.

4th from left clockwise starting at upper left, Gaylord,
Bell-Charter-Oak, Barranti, and Seventrees.

5th from left clockwise starting upper left, Chisholm's Trail, Lobo,
Bucheimer's Hank Sloan, and Sparks 200AW.

I used to have a Tex Shoemaker, but it was left handed, so
I gave it away.

Among my favourite pics, John Bianchi's dead knockoff of Heiser's 459:

a heiser 459 predated bianchi -- which twin has the toni (4).jpg Bianchi

a heiser 459 predated bianchi -- which twin has the toni (3).JPG Heiser

a heiser 459 predated bianchi -- which twin has the toni (1).jpg Both cut open

a heiser 459 predated bianchi -- which twin has the toni (2).jpg and overlaid patterns

Notice I call these images "which twin has the Toni", if you remember the old hair products ad :-).

I believe the FBI developed this design in the early '70s b/c the hammer on the issued weapon was damaging the coats of their agents. Someone correct me if I'm not remembering this correctly.

I, and others, have studied that subject ad nauseam.
Both Myres and Heiser show "Dog Ears" in their catalogs
in the early 1940s. Wally Wolfram's were a little later
in the 1940s.
You may be thinking of the Bucheimer Hank Sloan. Hank was
a high-up in the FBI. He received a patent for his adjustable
welt. It is a common misconception that he "invented" the
dog ear. He just borrowed it, as did many others, as shown
in my post above.

I have an old Bucheimer Hank Sloan (pre-patent). It's a very cool holster for my model 66, except the belt loop is small.

Back in the 1950s and 1960 men's belts tended to be kinda
narrow. The two Chic Gaylord holsters I have only take a
belt up to one and a quarter inches. I have an old Uncle
Mike gunbelt that is one and a quarter so it fits perfectly.
Maybe you can find the size you need on ebay?

This Myers dog ear is the most expensive holster I have.
Primarily because I had to find a 3.5" pre-27 to stick in it.

That is a beauty. I know buying a gun to go with a holster can
get kinda expensive. I've been there a time or two.
