Default 5" Holsters

I've always thought the 5" barrel looked best on both K and N frames. Is there really a more attractive smith than a Mod 27 with a 5" barrel? Not having one of those I do have a 1972 M10-5 with that barrel and finally found a hoster for it. I picked it up new on ebay for $25 a while back. I'm a bit anal in that I don't want a longer holster than I need, kind of like wearing longer pants in case I grow more. I also don't like the end of the barrel sticking out of a shorter holster. Do any of our LEO's know if this type (swivel) was used by beat cops or just mounted, horse of cycle, patrol. Also curious as to how popular the 5" was back in the day.

A 5” N-frame is a favorite of mine and a few months back I was looking for a solid leather holster for my 5” 27-2 as the holster I had made was just too big and the gun rattled around in it. Found a Bianchi 111 Cyclone in ebay for like $40 and love it on the rare occasion I have it on my belt in the woods.

Swivel holsters were once the standard for all LEOs in uniform. The flap version far less so. Most common on solo bike patrol (motorcycle cops). Slow on the draw they were generally tolerated only where the elements and gravity made them necessary. Hume's era was Sixties and Seventies though the company continued far later, might even still be in business.

Hume was sold to Oklahoma Leather, so it's now kind of a
subsidiary but they still use Don Hume's name. They would
be crazy not to.

The turn-knob fastener on that flap holster is unusual. IIRC some agency required it, but who? For an agency considering a standard flap holster to be too fast on the draw. In Canada, maybe.

Just found one in my photo file, a Hume like the OP's, identified as being made for Detroit. It might even be true.

Someone once posted pics here of a Safariland Model 29 in five-inch. I think it was ordered for a five-inch M-27. Was lined and had basketweave stamping.

El Paso Saddlery's Model 2 is a virtual duplicate and still made.

If I remember Ruger flap holsters also had this fastener. What was the disadvantage or advantage of it?

When I started as an LEO in the early 70's, we were required to wear a flap holster. The younger officers ,myself included, did not like it, however we said "aye, aye, sir" and we and did as ordered. The holsters did not change until the 1980's, when we finally entered the 20th century. In those days we were mostly prior military and understood DISCIPLINE.

I like 5" guns as well and am always on the lookout for proper holsters for them. Here are a few I've found over the years- a George Lawrence, S.D. Myres and Heiser.
Regards,
turnerriver

This holster is completely unmarked. I suspect possibly Mexican origin ? It fits a 5" K frame revolver perfectly. The worksmanship is quite good. I have never seen that color thong edge lacing before.

I knew several patrol officers who carried their sidearms in swivel holsters. One of those officers had the swivel come apart, dropping the holstered revolver to fall to the ground. He then went to a Jordan style holster.

I have a 5" Colt Official Police. I like the Meyers F.B.I.style ,I will have to get my son to make a period holster with coral tooling no strap.

i believe there was a time when Detroit beat officers wore 5" Colts or Smiths in Bucheimer full flap swivel holsters with loops for 6 rounds above the swivel on the belt tunnel

Lt JL beat me to it. 5 inch HD was a very popular length too.
