Lawrence holster
Thought I would post a picture. I received this old Lawrence with a newly acquired pre 29. Was it originally made for a 29 6 1/2?

120 is the "Keith" style. B is for basket weave.
Made for .44 Magnum. 6.5" barrel.

My best guess is that that one is for a S&W. Holsters for single actions usually show signs of a slight bulge for the ejector rod housing. I'm not seeing any bulge on that holster, nor any wear where an ejector rod would 'print' through the leather.

I thought it was a good question. I was unsure of the answer, but what
Mark says sounds good to me.

From the query it never occurred that the actual question was DA or SA. I thought it was some obscure difference between a 29 and a pre29 whatever that is. Of course it's for a DA N frame Iin 6-1/2" regardless. Because although the Super Blackhawk was available in their day, the pistol was only in 7-1/2". To the company it would have seemed obvious :-)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the Ruger originally came in 6 1/2”.
Later on, the 7 1/2” and 10” were added.

Yes, the first Ruger 44s were Blackhawks with 6 1/2 inch barrels. Then came the Super Blackhawk with the 7 1/2 inch barrel.

And, the frame of the original "flat top" Blackhawk was a bit smaller than the Super.

This is my 44 Flattop. And, in my opinion, the one Ruger should have made.

Dave Workman can make one for you. Exactly, if that's what you want.
Isn't this close? It's fish scale, not basket weave, but he does plenty of basket weave.

Nope , not even . Two completely different designs . Only similarity I see is they are both made of leather .

Eddie has a point; the Lawrence is a true Threepersons as made only for revolvers. The holster pictured is the equivalent for the auto and so very different in design from the Lawrence of the OP's image.

I really believe the holster was made for the Ruger. But I think the Smith has resided in it for quite awhile. Seems to be formed around it

After seeing that pic, I'd still guess it was made for the S&W. If it were made for a Ruger, the safety strap would likely be too short to fasten with the S&W in it. I say that because I have a Threepersons style holster for a Blackhawk, and although an N frame will physically fit into it, the safety strap is too short.
I'd be interested to know if a Ruger BH will actually fit into it. Most holsters made for D/A revolvers won't accomodate single actions due to the ejector rod housing. If you have a BH, even a 4-5/8 or 5-1/2 inch, you could find out easy enough. The ejector rod housings are the same length on all but the 7-1/2 and 10 inch BH's.

I agree. I might not know my ancient Ruger history but I 'saw' a DA revolver holster in the OP's initial pics :-).

Here are the pics. The Ruger fits nicely, but the strap is long

I agree and I like that. Mine's been spiffed up a bit - it was originally a 6 1/2" gun in about the same condition as yours.

Pretty much how I guessed it would be. Not too surprised the gun actually fit in the holster. Some will, some won't. We've all seen holsters with two snaps on the safety strap. I'm sure the second snap was added to most of 'em so the holster could be be used for two different guns.

The reason for the 2nd snap is so you can snap the retention strap out
of the way when you carry your gun in the holster as a speed scabbard.
Shown here on my Bill Jordan designed Border Patrol holster by Myres.
The subject was written about by Jordan.

As Steve said the strap is too long with the Ruger in it.
In my photo below you can see it is made for the Ruger,
which makes the strap too short for the S&W .44 Magnum.

What I was actually referring to are the ones that have extra snaps that were added by their owners. The border patrol style isn't one that will accomodate both a S/A and a D/A revolver.

Is that one of Henry Cassady's? I've got three from him, and the materials and workmanship are as good as any Threepersons from any of the "big name" makers. And his prices are very fair. Only problem is that his selection is limited to just a few different models of guns, and he doesn't offer any belts or other accessories.

Yes, every bit as good as Lawrence, maybe even better. Last time I went
looking for HC I couldn't find him. Have you communicated with him
recently? email address?
