Default MORE OF CRAZYPHIL'S EYE CANDY

36. Here is a Heiser 757. I have been told that it is fairly rare.
It looks black in the photo, but actually it is oxblood. Oxblood
has been described as a dull, reddish, brown, and I think this
one fits that description. I would like to know how to lighten
it up and shine it a bit. It is shown with the Texas Gunslinger
belt, Bear knife, my Boonie hat, and the S&W Model 10 4" barrel.

For comparison, the belt is Cordovan. Technically, cordovan is
a type of leather, but the word is used often to describe a color.

Well, here is what I tried. I sprayed the holster with a degreaser,
covered it in corn starch thinking that might suck the grease up
out of the holster, then dried it with a hair dryer. Then I applied
a little Blackrock Leather 'N Rich with my fingers, wiped it down
with a cloth, and dried it again with hair dryer. Then brushed it
with a shoe brush. The results are not spectacular, but there is
a little more definition in the carving, and the brown in peeking
through. Before on the left, After on the right.

Phil, I am certainly no expert, but the one on the right looks better to me.

38. This one seems to enjoy quite a lot of time hanging on my hip.
It is an RSS (Revolver Super Speed). One of Seventrees designs made
by Ken Null. S&W Model 10 2" barrel on board. The knife is a Junkyard
Dog II by Kershaw. The Carhart keeps my noggin warm.

I have shared this information before, but it's been a while, and maybe
worth repeating. For reference, I will call the following #39, 40, 41 & 42.

Charles Askins was firearms instructor for the Border Patrol in 1936 when
he, and S. D. "Sam" Myres designed a holster for the Border Patrol. It is
shown below on the left.

Bill Jordan was a Border Patrolman in 1941 and was not satisfied with the
Askins design or the Tom Threeperson holster either. So he borrowed the
best features from those two and also from a military holster for the .45
auto. He took his design to C. H. Werner at Alpine Saddlery in Alpine, TX.
and had his holster made.

He carried it all through WWII while island hopping across the Pacific as
a Marine. By the time he got back his holster was well worn and kinda
beat up, so he stopped in to S. D. Myres shop in El Paso and had it
replaced. It became the Jordan Border Patrol holster. Sam put it in his
catalog and it wasn't long before every lawman in the country wanted a
holster just like Bill Jordans. It is shown below 2nd from left.

The Korean War started in 1949 and Bill, being a Marine reserve officer,
was called back to duty. While he was away Sam Myres passed away.
Many other makers copied the Jordan Border Patrol holster. Some not
very good quality. So when Bill returned he had the holster named for
him trademarked.

Bill became acquainted with Don Hume, and liked his work, so he gave
Don the exclusive right to the use of the trademark. Don Hume's Jordan
Border Patrol is shown 3rd from left.

Hume later upgraded the Border Patrol replacing the retention strap with
a thumb break, as shown in the photo 4th from left.

To me this is eye candy too.

PS the Ranger style belt in 1, 2 & 4 was made by, and a gift from, Red Nichols.
The belt in #3 is by Bianchi.

Another little history lesson that, in my humble opinion,
is worth repeating, I will refer to as #43, 44, 45 & 46.

Royal Eubanks started Eubanks Leather in Boise in 1939.
A holster marked Eubanks Leather is shown below left.
The cartridge belt is by Lawrence. The knife by Marbles.
The S&W is a Model 10 with 4" barrel.

Pioneerer Tent & Awning was already in business. An example
of Pioneer Leather holster is shown 2nd from left. Lawrence
cartridge belt again, and a Schrade knife.

In 1949 Eubanks sold to Pioneer, and Pioneer started using
the Eubanks Pioneer mark. Example 3rd from left. The same
Lawrence cartridge belt, a Buck knife, and Spegel grips on
the Colt's Agent. This little holster needed re-lacing, so it
was done by an amateur who uses the alias crazyphil.
The S&W is Model 10 with 2" barrel.

In 1954 Eubanks covenant to not compete expired, so Royal
went back in to business, Pioneer had trademarked the name
Eubanks Pioneer, so Royal Eubanks took the name Idaho Leather.
An example is shown 4th from left. The holster was made for a
Ruger, but I don't have one. The Colt 1911 fits, so why not?
The knife is by Case.

Shortly after starting Idaho Leather, Royal Eubanks passed away.
His widow sold to a family friend Bud Wetzel. Bud's son Ben Wetzel
operated Idaho Leather until he died December 17, 2016.

Pioneer ceased operations in 1972. So, Eubanks, Eubanks Pioneer,
and Idaho Leather are all history.

Today's photos are #47, 48, 49, 50 & 51.

In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt directed his Attorney General to
start an investigative unit. It became the FBI.

For the first 25 years 1908-1933 Agents used their own guns and holsters.
They had to obtain permits from sheriffs in whatever county they were
assigned to.

In 1933, according to Larry Wack, Colt's Police Positive was designated
"the weapon of choice" by the bureau. The Kansas City massacre in 1934
convinced the FBI that they needed a formal firearms training program.

One of the gunslingers they brought on board to provide training was
Jelly Bryce. He was in charge of training at Quantico for a while. Jim
Higinbotham, a credible witness, was quoted as saying that Jelly Bryce
"designed a Threepersons style holster with a covered trigger."

I have a holster, made by Crump, shown below on the left, with the
covered trigger. The holster is stamped Q37. In Ron Owen's book
Legendary Lawman, there is a photo on page 99 showing Jelly Bryce
teaching at Quantico in 1937. Coincidence? I don't think so.

During the 1940s and into the 1950s new agent recruits were given a
choice of the S&W Military & Police (now known as Model 10) or Colt's
Official Police, both in .38 Spl. They were also provided a holster. The
holsters were Heiser 457s provided by Evaluators, shown 2nd from left,
or a similar model by Crump, shown 3rd from left.

Myres model 614 "Tom Threepersons holster", 4th from left, and
Berns-Martin's Universal Speed Scabbard, 5th from left, were both very
popular, and though not issued, they were authorized.

So, here is the eye candy:

Here are photos #52, 53, 54, 55, & 56.

Agents wore suits in those days, and the hammer spur on their revolvers
would shred the lining of their suit jackets. Some smart maker designed
a hammer protector, to form a barrier between the hammer spur and the
jacket lining. By the early 1950s Myres, Heiser and Crump were offering
the hammer protector as an option. Myres #624 is shown on the left.
Heiser's #459 is shown 2nd from left.

The hammer protector had and has several different names.
My favorite is "Dog Ear" which is the name given it by Texas Rangers.

Lawrence also made FBI style holsters, but didn't get involved until
the 1960s. A model #34, that the owner shortened for better concealment,
is show 3rd from left. It is also called the FBI "Quick Draw" model.
4th from left is a Lawrence with the hammer protector. It is called
the "Special Agent".

Just 15 or 20 years ago the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team chose a single
action 1911 semi-auto by Springfield as their official sidearm. They
chose a DeSantis holster, appropriately called the HRT. Shown here
5th from left.

Today's eye candy is all by Price Western Leather (PWL). A large British
company that makes and sells fine leather holsters all around the world.
Not particularly well known in the USA however.

Here are #57, 58, 59, 60 & 61:

I bought the model 120TS many years ago for my Colt's Agent,
shown on the left.

On their web page catalog they showed a neat little OWB holster that they
said was based on Chic Gaylord's "eightball". Being a student of Gaylord's
holsters, I knew the eightball was a pocket holster. Like eightball in the
side pocket. I pointed out their error to them.

They made the change and started calling it their version of Chic Gaylord's
speed scabbard. It is their model 320.

2nd from left is a black one with my Colt's Agent, on a Culver gator belt,
with a silver Navajo buckle by O. Nezzie, a Case knife, and HKS loader.

3rd from left is a chestnut 320 shown with my S&W 642 on a Haugen belt
with a Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) knife.

4th from left is the same 320 in black on a Sparks gunbelt, shown with
an S&W 642 and S&W knife.

5th from left is also a model 320 in Havana, on a Culver belt, with my
S&W 642 and Kershaw's Junkyard Dog II knife.

Wally Wolfram's "dog ear" holsters. I have a biography of Wally here
on the forum titled WALLY WOLFRAM'S SAGA. If interested, just go up
to the SEARCH function and plug it in.

Here is my little Wolfram collection. Numbered 62 through 66 for
identification.

On the left a very early Wolfram when he was a police officer in
Albuquerque, NM. He called his brand WOLF at that time.

2nd from left is one of his BLAZER brand. Made after he had moved
to Monrovia, California. His understudy, John Bianchi, says nice things
about Wally in his BLUE STEEL AND GUNLEATHER.

3rd from left is one that he made for Colt. He made a lot of holsters
for resale by vendors, such as Colt, Cake, Pitt, etc.

4th from left is one he made for S&W. Wally sold his business to S&W
and helped them get started in the holster business.

5th from left is another one made for S&W, but this one is for a 4".

Today's eye candy might be remembered by some of our old cops.
I was never a cop, but a "rent a cop" for a while. Numbers 67 - 71.

Jim Cirillo served on the NYPD Stake Out Unit 1968-1973. It is well
known that he used a .38 Spl. M&P with a 4" bull barrel. I wanted to
know what kind of holster he used.

I found a clue on page XIV of his book GUNS, BULLETS, AND GUNFIGHTS.
The photo shows him wearing a swivel holster with 12 cartridge loops and
an extra slide with another 12 loops. Closest I could come to identifying
it is the Bucheimer-Clark Patrolman. Two separate former NYPD cops who
knew Jim, and shot with him at the range, said the holster looks like the
model Jim wore, or one very much like it. Shown on the left below.

In 1960 Bianchi acquired the Berns-Martin patents. Ten years later his
model B27 appeared in his catalog. The "break front" was used by many
cops in the 1970s. 2nd from left.

Bianchi's model 2800 "The Judge" opened the muzzle to overcome the
"muzzle drag" of the B27. It also provided a swivel. 3rd from left.

When the Beretta M9/92 came along a lot of PDs adopted it. One of
the holsters made for it was this Tex Shoemaker model shown 4th from left.

I kinda like the Safariland, shown 5th from left, for carrying the 1911
cocked and locked.

Here are a few more small "dog ear" style holsters. #72 through #76:

On the left, this black floral carved no name holster was a gift from Tom
aka -db- It is on Milt Sparks gunbelt with my 2" Model 10. The knife is
from Benchmade and the cap by Carhart.

2nd from left is this Heiser #459 made for Evaluators, on a Haugen
gunbelt. The knife is a Puma Prince and the speed strip a Bianchi.
Hosting my vintge Charter Undercover.

3rd from left is a Maverick brand paddle on a Simply Rugged Belt.
The silver dollar buckle is my birth year (1935) The Puma knife again,
and the Charter Undercover.

4th from left is another paddle style holster by Crump on a Culver belt
with a silver Navajo buckle by O. Nezzie, a very sharp Piranha knife,
and my Colt's Agent.

5th from left is a Lawrence 34V pigskin "Special Agent". Haugen belt,
Puma knife, and the S&W 2" model 10.

Back in April '18 I took a break from the 5 a day posts. It is kinda
difficult to keep the ones that I have posted from the ones that I
haven't posted.

But here are 5 more that I believe I have acquired since April and I
don't think were posted previously.

Left to Right:

Strong Protector with my model 29, on a David Keith ranger style belt,
and my winter cap. I had a plain black protector that I liked, but someone
liked it more than I did so I let it go. Glad I found this one. The knife is
a Schrade.

Lawrence 34B FBI "extra quick draw basket weave, also on David Keith's
ranger style belt, with a Sharps stag handle Bowie, and my Boonie hat.
This one was a mess when I got it. I removed the strap and cleaned it
up. Not too hard on the eyes now. Model 19 Combat Magnum on board.

Eubanks black carved & laced, Sparks gun belt, & Case knife.
This is the only floral carved Eubanks I have ever found. Think
it is quite unique. Shown with 4" model 10.

Just noticed that this one was posted in #68, so I will replace it
with this little floral carved Myres, with a Franz-Loc clip on the
back. Shown on Sparks gun belt hosting my vintage Charter
Undercover. This causes the photo to be in 5th position.

Tex Shoemaker basket weave with "dog ear". I had one of Tex's
previously but it was left handed, and I'm not, so I gave it away. This
one is shown with my model 67 Combat Masterpiece, riding on this
gorgeous ranger style belt, made and given to me by my friend Red
Nichols. This photo is now in 4th position.

Those are Herrett's Jordan Troopers. I sent them a drawing
of the outline of my shooting hand and they made them a
perfect fit.

Just for fun, my 1860 Army Colt is a non-firing replica, but it needs
leather housing just like his friends that he lives with, so here they are.
Left to Right:

Big Texas Leather Works distressed leather crossdraw. The belt is by
Haugen, the knife is by Schrade, and of course the Greek Fisheran's cap.

Kansas style single loop (from Cabelas), Cowtown cartridge belt,
Bear knife, sheath, and .44 cartridges.

Missouri Skin Tight I made when I read Chic's Handgunner's Guide.
Shown with Haugen belt, and Puma Prince knife.

Cavalry holster with U.S. buckle and belt.

Hunter buscaero rig, with silver knight tribute to Paladin. Have gun
will travel. Case knife. Resistol hat.

I haven't updated this thread for a while. Here are 3 of my fairly recent
acquisitions. Left to Right:

Safariland model #16 basket weave dark brown, on James Ranger style
belt, with Piranha knife, and NSA cap. S&W Model 642.

Idaho Leather dark brown basket weave & laced, on James belt.
Charter's vintage Undercover.

Heiser's 457 on Chic Gaylord's gun belt, Buck knife, & Resistol hat.
Colt's Agent with Craig Spegel stocks.

Phil—I don’t know how I missed this thread until now! It’s like the thread I saw the other day on shot loads (Of which I am a huge fan—I am not as good a shot as most everyone else on here, so I need a shot load to hit rats and snakes and such around the farm). The gentleman, Tony M. had given a magazine article quality thread, and it had not even been rated! I remedied that with a 5 start rating on a 10 star thread. This is another such thread. Pictorial of making crimped .38S&W shot loads

Keep the pictures coming!

Superb outfits and combinations! Love the Stetson "Open Road". Always wanted one but when I finally found one and tried it on, it just didn't look right on me. Need a little wider brim I reckon. Funny, it looked right on Bill Jordan and we're about the same size and build. Ha.

Here are a few old timers we don't see very often. Left to Right:

A very old Shipley with dog ear, probably made for 3.5" N fame
because my 4" model 29 doesn't go in far enough.

Lewis cross draw, shown with model 10 2" barrel. Not correctly
shown on the belt for cross draw.

Brauer cross draw, shown with 642-1 sporting Hogue's Blue Lava grips.
The knife is Piranha. Sharp enough to be used as a scalpel in needed.

Brauer dog ear with retention strap, on Sparks gun belt, shown with
model 67.

Bucheimer Sheriff model, also a cross draw, shown with vintage
Charter Undercover. The knife is a Bear.

I don't carry IWB very often, but when I do I have some good choices.
Left to Right:

Garrity's "inconspicuous", with S&W 642-1, on Sparks gun belt.

Alessi's black hard shell talon, again with my 642.

Delfatti's Shark Trim on Crescent shark belt, with 642. The knife
is Kershaw's Junkyard Dog II.

Ken Null's Gibson Covert with my Colt's Agent. CRKT knife.

Spark's VMII, with 1911 Colt's Gold Cup, Sparks gun belt.

Here are a few more that I don't think have been posted in this thread.
I became obsessed with dog ears. Here Left to Right:

Bucheimer's Hank Sloan with S&W Model 67. So popular that a lot of
folks call holsters with dog ears Hank Sloan style, but the ear was
created at least 20 years before Hank's holster. The belt is from
Simply Rugged. The knife is CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool)

Safariland with S&W Model 29 on my Haugen belt.

Bianchi's #3 with S&W Model 19 & Haugen belt again.

Lobo (when Ray was still Lobo) with S&W Model 19.
Great example of detailed boning. 30 dollar belt, jazzed
up a bit with hardware.

Thad Rybka's rendition of the dog ear, also with Model 19,
Haugen belt, and Puma Prince knife.

Here are a few acquired since my last post. I was interested in "fake"
leather for a while, so had to have a "Wessonhide". Shown on the left
with S&W Model 10 2" barrel, Haugen belt, Puma Prince knife. 19 is the
model number that designates S&W holsters as Wessonhide. Size of
this one is 32.

2nd from left is a glossy Don Hume made with the Clarino overlay. Shown
with my Model 67 Combat Masterpiece, Bianchi belt, and HKS loaders.

3rd from left is a Lawrence 34L (L for laced) and rear sight protector.
Also shown with my Model 67, Sparks gunbelt, and my NSA cap.

4th from left is a Bianchi "Lightning" with my S&W 642-1, Haugen belt,
Piranha knife, and private pilot cap.

5th from left is a Lawrence model 22 IWB size 540 which is a perfect
fit for my 642. Shown on a Simply Rugged belt, with Piranha knife,
and NSA cap.

Here lately I have been trying to match the gun to a knife/partner.
Excuse me if some of them are repeats. Here are some samples
so far. Left to right:

S&W Model 10 4" barrel, Brill holster, James belt, Marbles knife with
stag handle and Damascus blade. Grips are supposed to come close
to matching the knife grip.

S&W Model 10 2" barrel, Lawrence 34V pigskin Special Agent holster,
Haugen belt, Puma Prince knife. Stag handle on Puma matches quite
well with the Grashorn grips on the revolver.

1911 Colt series 80 Gold Cup National Match, with Herrett double diamond
cocobolo panels. The knife if from Ultimate Equipment called a M1911.
Had to stain the panels a bit to get them close to the cocobolos.
The holster is a Heiser #728. The belt from Texas Gunslingers.

S&W 642-1 in a Chic Gaylord speed scabbard on Uncle Mike's "Mirage"
belt. The Hogue Blue Lava grips go well with the the Piranha knife.

Civil War era replica 1860 Colt Army, flap holster, U.S. buckle,
and cap. Trooper may have worn a Bowie knife kinda like this one.

This just in. A Idaho Leather stamped and laced holster, made for a 4"
N Frame. I'm guessing it was made by Mr. Eubanks about 1954. It has
the sight protector that makes it ideal for my S&W Model 29.
Shown on Keith belt, with Buck knife and my boondocks hat.
2nd from left is the same Idaho Leather for 4" N Frame with my
S&W Model 29, this time after I treated it to a dab of Black Rock
Leather 'N' Rich.

My little stamped and laced Eubanks Pioneer Leather holster, but don't
blame them for the lacing. There were a few breaks in the lacing, so I
re-laced it. Blame me.

The little Eubanks Pioneer is marked HSS that I take to mean
High Standard Sentinel, but with a slight adjustment to the retention
strap it fits the 2" model 10 just fine.

It is on a belt made for me by David Keith. The gun is a Model 10 with
2" barrel wearing Grashorn elk grips. The (kinda) matching knife is a
Puma Prince. The hat is my 57 year old Resistol.

2nd from left, I was just trying to make a better picture. I need
all the practice I can get. I hope it's a little bit better. The only
difference is I traded the Resistol for my Barsalino hat.

It might be a little stretch to put this one in my eye candy thread, but
it is my latest rescue/rehab project. It's a Heiser model 417. I picked
it up for $30 and spent about $40 more on a retention stap and cleaning
it up.

It is shown on a Lawrence cartridge belt, with my Model 10 with 4"
barrel. Jay Scott grips on the S&W. The knife is by Sharps, with
stag horn (probably faux) grip. The sun bonnet is my 57 year old
Resistol.

Just acquired this old Eubanks a couple of weeks ago. If it isn't eye candy,
I don't know what is. Shown with 1873 Cavalry SAA replica. Texas
Gunslinger belt, Bear knife, and Open Road Stetson.

BTW the silver Navajo belt buckle is by Nezzie.

Sorry, for I have been neglecting this "eye candy" thread recently. But not
because I haven't been collecting.

I have collected several Hunters from their 3100 series, and also the 55L
basket weave spring type, shown below on the left, on a Sparks gunbelt.
The knife is a Case, and the hat is my Borsolino.

2nd from left is a Lawrence "Keith" 120, with 7.5" Colt replica, Cowtown
belt, Solingen knife, and my Stetson. Igiveup generously let me buy it
from him for what he paid at a gun show.

3rd from left is a Roy Baker open top pancake, with my Colt's Agent,
James belt, and my Stetson again.

4th from left is an unknown maker stamped LS as posted by Lee Barner.
Shown with my Model 19, on a Keith belt, again with my Stetson. Lee
let me buy it. Then knowing that Igiveup really, really liked it, I let him
buy it from me for the same as I paid Lee. Kinda trying to return the favor.

5th from left is the Viking 60 rescue that I just recently posted. It is shown
with 2" Model 10, on Sparks gunbelt. The knife is a Puma Prince, and the
NRA cap.

Hunter holsters series 1100 are plain. The same holster as 2100 is basket
weave. The same holster carved is 3100. I guess I kinda like the 3100s
because I have 4 of them now. Here are 2 of my most recent acquisitions:

On the left is a size 11 with my model 19 Combat Magnum on a Lawrence
cartridge belt. The knife is a Buck.

On the right is a size 30 with my model 10, on the same Lawrence belt.
The knife is a Marbles Damascus.

After many years of thinking of Hunter Holsters as just cheap junk I have also come to appreciate them. The model 1100 holsters could be found stacked on shelves or on display racks in any reasonably large Gun Shop that I explored in the late 1950's. It was easy to find the right size for your revolver or pistol. But there was no variety. They all looked the same. I soon looked for Buchiemer, Bianchi or Safariland with the many different styles of holsters. But the Hunter 1100s were easy to find exactly the right size for your gun and were reasonably priced. I must admit I still have a few Hunter Holsters.

You are right about Hunter holsters being readily available for most any model handgun.
I recently bought a new, old stock Hunter 1100 still in the box to fit my Ruger Hawkeye .256 Magnum. Not an easy gun to fit, a Blackhawk sized frame but with an 8.5" barrel and only made from 1963-64. I think the holster dates from the early 70's. Cost was under $40 with shipping. My alternative would have been an expensive custom job or a holster for a Blackhawk with an open toe and the barrel sticking out of the bottom.

Oh man. I remember back in the old days in Denver. Gart Brothers Sports Castle down on Broadway. They had tons of Hunters, the "home-town" holster company. I never really liked them all that much, mostly because they were so plain, like Jim said. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have picked up a crate full. But noooo, we were always looking for the latest from Bianchi or Safariland, the "fancy" stuff. I think I have exactly one Hunter 1100 that came with a 3" J-frame I bought 5 or 6 years ago. It's in excellent shape.... maybe I ought to take a second look at it.

Looking at my 1970 Shooters Bible, A Hunter 1100 retailed for $4.75. A Lawrence 1C Challenger model which was their lighter weight leather holster probably designed to compete with Hunter sold for $5.45. Lawrence's higher grade No. 24, in plain, oiled leather retailed for $8.40. Those were all holsters with a snap off design for easy on & off removal from a belt. The Hunter holsters weren't glamorous but they sure were serviceable and I'll bet rode on many of the hips of beginning shooters or those on a budget. And still are in good shape today.

Maybe a bit of a stretch to call these two eye candy, but I think they
are beautiful in their own way. Both meet authentic Tom Threeperson
criteria.

On the left a Bucheimer-Clark Rebel model 98 made for Colt SAA with
5.5" barrel. Shown with my replica with 4.75" barrel. The belt is by
Haugen, the knife is a Sharp's Bowie, and the Stetson is an Open Road.

On the right is a Bucheimer Federal Man model 570 also made for the
Colt SAA with 5.5" barrel. Shown also with my replica. Pro-Rider belt,
Schrade knife, and Boonie hat.
