Picture Request
I have purchased, oh horrors, a 2.5" GP100. I have been thinking about a field holster for it. I have looked at R. Grizzle's field holsters but wondered if anyone might have the time to post pictures of their field holster for carrying a large revolver and pass on some hints about what to look for.

It has a 2.5" barrel. I am not concerned about the revolver. I am interested in seeing field holster for large revolvers.

Don't have one for that model, but I've been very pleased with my El Paso Saddlery shoulder rig for brush in the K sizes; I imagine they have similar for Rugers.

I would look at a "pancake" style rig that kept the cylinder parallel to the belt, and kept the holster snugged into the body. Lack of barrel length will cause the gun and rig to "wobble" on the belt on a traditional rig like a Threepersons. Also check out an "Avenger" style rig with the rear tab that pulls the weapon into the waist.
Carrying the weapon close to the belt helps with fatigue, a weapon in a drop loop style holster will pull on the hip. You also need a sturdy belt that will support the weight of the gun 37 ozs or thereabouts and the weight of the holster. Should be a great woods bumming gun ! Let us know what you choose. And pics are always nice.
FWIW I carry a Ruger MC GP 100, and I carried a handgun as part of the job for over 33 years. Still carry daily.

Your advice makes lots of sense. I have been looking at the Simply Rugged Pancake and Lobo's Enhanced Avenger. The Simply Rugged seems to have a lot very pleased users and offers a retaining strap as an option.

It might be worth mentioning that many holsters made for S&W 'L' frames also fit GP100's quite well - and are often easier to find than those made for the GP's.

I like the Simply Rugged pancake holsters along with their Chesty Puller harness system for woods carry, ATV, tractor, even truck piloting. It's totally out of the way, in the center of my chest.
