Absolutely not the way to do that. Instead focus on the socket which is the female half and readily replaceable if you get carried away.
Using common pliers of the sort with the concave gripping arcs inside, squeeze the socket at right angles to the direction of opening the strap. It is the creating of a slight oval in the socket, that makes the ring inside it more resistant to opening. Go too far? Might have to have it replaced at a shoe shop.
