Richard Egan‘s rig in “The Hunters”
I watched part of it today and had forgotten about Richard Egan’s BBQ rig: a brace of pearl-stocked 1911s.
Anyone know what the leather was?
For those who may not have seen it, Egan portrays a USAF Colonel in Korea.
Sorry, I couldn’t find any stills.

Not I want to see the movie!
Can’t find a free one, may do a rent.

I wondered the same thing.... The belt was brown leather with a "Sam Browne" buckle and eyelet hanger holes and the holsters were a pouch style with hold strap over the grip of the .45. The holster had the hanger wire like the regulation flap holsters.
Since it was a 50's movie (1958) I would expect that it was a creation of the Master Holster maker in North Hollywood, Alphonso. Or perhaps it was a custom job by Arvo Ojala…… In any case, it is a one-of-a-kind rig!

Great movie. In his book, Chuck Yeager wrote that he was one of the stunt pilots.

Just saw it.
Thought the combat - flying shots were great.
Story line, a little weak.
Wearing Double gun rigs in your office?
George Patton excessive!

Not unusual for AF to wear Squadron colors scarf with flying suit.
The only time I ever wore one was on SAC alert.
It was a required uniform item.
Even then I only put it on when I needed to be in ‘full uniform.’
Found this pic online.
Theres my old North Carolina Buddy Charlie Creech.
His Dad knew Carbine Williams.

Remember it is just a movie. Not all that happens in the movies happens in real life.

I don't really care much about correctness regarding guns in movies and I'm a Richard Egan fan, but that holster/pistol rig could not be overlooked. It was arrogantly goofy at best. Fortunately,"The Hunters" is still a fine movie.

I too, liked Richard Egan as an actor. Too bad he did not have more and better roles. Not really a fan of how correct a movie is, but just want it to be entertaining is all. Watched "TOP GUN" while working on the flight deck of U.S.S. Saratoga as a Flight Deck Coordinator for a Marine attack squadron. We were very entertained, but it was full of inaccuracies to say the least. Never in my career did I see an aircrew of a fighter or attack aircraft with a gunbelt on, only could wear shoulder holsters in their flight gear.

He looks like a working guy, not a movie actor; I'd give him a pass on that rig.

I think General George S. Patton would remark that the pearl grips would be more appropriate for a New Orleans pimp.

What? Movies aren’t real
That explains why I never found a yellow brick road.
As my college film professor used to say, anything can happen in real life. In the movies, it has to be plausible.

It's probably valid. Looks like a Colt SAA in a Lawrence Model 120 holster. Basically, a Threepersons type, although Elmer Keith claimed it was his design.
But jet fighter pilots sometimes wore sidearms on their belts. You can find pics of Col. Robin Olds and other Phantom drivers with issued belt holsters for their .38's. Some had an extra retention strap to keep the gun secure during ejection.
In WW II, Air Corps crews can be seen with both belt and shoulder holsters. Seems to have been an individual choice. I've seen pics of both types in the same bomber crews. And some enlisted men wore .45s. I think this was more common in the China-Burma- India theater, where they would possibly bail out over wild jungles and were also very afraid of Japanese troops killing captives.
Helo crews in Vietnam seemed to all routinely wear sidearms although holsters varied. One photo shows a USMC door gunner lugging two M-60 MG's to his helo. His holster was a shoulder type adapted to belt wear.
Chic Gaylord mentioned making a version of his Federal Speed Scabbard for an AF pilot. The gun was a Colt Official Police, and the holster had an added retention strap. But he didn't show a photo in that article.
I was in the USAF in the 1960's and come to think of it, when I saw Navy aircrew, they all wore shoulder holsters and their knives were on their vests. Maybe the Navy was more particular about that than was the USAF. Frankly, in my career field, I don't think a supervisor ever paid attention to the holster that I wore, but it had to be a belt model. But I was a cop, not aircrew.

In an effort to keep this thread Korea -
How these guys?
Far left- he looks like Sam Shepard !
Appears to be carrying a revolver.
Second from left - Charles Loring, awarded Medal of Honor.
Appears to be wearing shoulder holster, as does third from left.

Time for a Gyrene!
In Korea The marines operated the Douglas F3-D night interceptor.
They were successful in shooting down MiG-15s and other enemy aircraft.

Note his S&W Victory Model .38 in a shoulder holster converted to belt wear.
I built a plastic model of an F-3D as a boy.
