Default Holster wear?

Question about "holster wear." How concerned should I be about finish wear to my Sig P210? I acquired a Mitch Rosen Sport for the Sig P210 and the interior surface seems pretty abrasive. The holster is pretty much perfect for that which it is designed; tightly holding the weapon in place until drawn.

Consequently, it is extremely stiff as one would want. It is unlined, so the interior is "rough out" in the extreme. How concerned should I be about finish wear?

This, of course, raises the question of holster carrying a firearm with relatively high value. My Sig is not unfired, but is in really nice condition. I don't need to carry it, but I want to carry it occasionally rather than just relegate it to the safe.

I'm sure this more than qualifies as a first world problem, but I can't think of another place where my concerns of the balance between using a weapon as intended versus caring for a finely crafted gun in a responsible way could be addressed.

Thanks for any experience or opinions.

From what I hear a snug fit helps most of all and you have that going for you already.I myself thy to buy as many of my firearms in stainless just for that reason. There will still be wear but it won’t show as much as a blued Gun.

If you want your gun to remain pristine, leave it in the safe.

You’ll get holster wear pretty much whatever you do.

The rough side of leather attracts grit, grime and other stuff that adds finish wear compared to the smooth side of leather.

High end lined holsters are the best, for lots of reasons including minimizing wear.

If you're worried about wear from an unlined holster, get youself a holster lined with with smooth out leather and carry it in that.
Either way though there's gonna be some holster wear.

Shouldn't concern you at all. If you carry a gun, it happens.

You should see the wear on my 442 from constant range and dryfire draw practice

If you don't want holster wear, don't holster it.

It's not that I don't want any wear, I just was concerned about the unlined holster being too aggressive on the finish.

When I get a new holster , I've never owned a lined one, I melt a little beeswax and rub it into the insides , once I get a good layer rubbed in , I use the hair dryer on the insides to melt the beeswax so it will soak in the surface a little , any excess can be removed with a paper towel and heat.
The beeswax does not soften the leather but does put a waxed surface between the leather and the guns finish.
I find the wax better than neatsfoot oil or any grease that will soften the leather.

Yours is a fair question, and I think that some of the responses haven't taken into account that you've an unusual situation with your particular holster: you say it is rough and abrasive. That is NOT normal on today's unlined holsters; most are made from cowhide shoulders and have a pasted flesh, so they are as smooth as a baby's bottom inside next to your pistol.

A rough flesh side is usually from the maker splitting the hide to an exacting thickness, which removes the pasting. It would be an unusual holster maker that has a splitting machine; on the other hand, I have access to one at a saddler and use it routinely to make my (kangaroo lined) holsters.

I'd object to the maker; it's not normal or acceptable. Paying more for a lining isn't a fair answer from a maker, either. If they sell them unlined, then the unlined ones should be made well.

People think Kydex scratches gun finish, I think leather rubs gun finish. I have never had a problem with kydex.

For a Sig 210 I wouldn't feel bad putting out a few bucks for a
good lined holster. It's not going to stop wear completely but
will be a lot easier on it. You get what you pay for, I've got guns
I've had since I was a kid with blue wear from carrying in the
old $5 holsters( now $50 ). I didn't know any better then, now
I won't put a gun in a unlined holster. I have a Ruger SBH from
NIB in 60s that has been carried a lot in a lined holster. It has
blue wear, but only back strap & frame above trigger from my
hands and trigger finger. Very light Muzzel wear or other holster
contact points. Most people wouldn't notice it.

If you carry in a holster, there will eventually be some wear. They key to minimizing the wear is a good fit. Drawing and reholstering is not where most of the wear comes from; shifting constantly inside the holster is.

Lined vs. unlined is really a non-issue. If the fit is sloppy, even the finest lining will create rapid wear.
