Great. Another addiction. Flap holsters.
I have an admiration for fine leather, as I’ve posted before. And when it’s wrapped around a big ole N frame Smith, it just don’t get any better.
Just picked this one up, an old (40’s?) Heiser flapper made for Buffalo Brand Sporting Goods. I can stare at these things all evening .....

Gorgeous! I'm going to call it '50s because that is Heiser's "speed carving" (my term for it and it is all stamping and no carving) of their final era after Keyston took them over on '51. Turnerriver please weigh on ☺

That is a real beauty! The laced seam is very attractive, especially with the carving and stamping work. Great find!

It’s called substitution- a vain attempt to substitute one addictive substance for another. Pretty soon you end up wanting more of both.
Buffalo Brand was a budget line by Heiser that offered rawhide edge lacing, most budget lines didn’t. The rivets used on Buffalo Brand holsters actually had a running buffalo stamped on them. The carving or stamping is identical to another of Heiser’s budget lines, the Sportsman line- “A Low Cost-High Quality Line .” This line first appeared in the number 52 catalog which still offered established Heiser models that were described as being hand carved. The Sportsman line items had no such descriptions, the floral embossed models were depicted but not described. They were of course more expensive than the plain Sportsman holsters. The Sportsman line didn’t offer rawhide edge lacing. I agree with Red, your holster was probably made in the 1950’s although late 1940’s is possible; I don’t have any paper regarding Buffalo Brand.
That’s a very fine looking holster, I like the flap holsters too.
Regards,
turnerriver

Awesome, thanks once again for the details! I knew it wasn’t carved because of the price I paid for it so no disappointment there.

Thank you John! I learned something new. Here's something new for you, then: the running buffalo is Keyston Bros' logo, and their 'makers mark' on all their capgun holster sets:
1 marks (17).jpg
keyston classics (34).jpg
keyston classics (33).jpg
And, as we know for certain, Keyston had acquired Heiser in 1951; and the No. 52 Heiser-Keyston catalogue from '57. I've identified nearly 300 distinctly different sets by Keyston; they were the kings of that biz (capgun sets for 'junior cowboys and cowgirls') in the 1950s. In the '60s that biz came crashing down with the advent of Bond films and copycat tv series.

I have the addiction too.
I am addicted to flap holsters too. The meager "Hodge Podge" collection that I have gathered, has several flap holsters that will fit multi types, and brands. some require a home made strap adapter to make them fit. The first example of that type flap holster is a George Lawrence holster, marked CON - P1. I assume that it was made to hold a 10" TC Contender, with iron sights, or scope, but, it will also hold a S&W 83/8" Mod.17, with 3/4" Redfield LER scope, or the equivalent Colt revolver. A S&W Mod. 27, with iron sights, and 10" TC Contender, with iron sights, or scoped, and possibly others. It is shown with three of the ones that it holds nicely.

While many were sheer works of art, cops nicknamed these Widow Makers b/c it took so long to get your gun out of it.

Understood, I would never use for S/D. But hunting squirrels or deer? Heck yeah!

I like them not only for their looks, but also for the practical aspect of protecting the handgun. I have a couple of plain jane Double D flap holsters that are convertible from open top to flap cover for my 66 and 686. I double down using the hammer strap for riding and bashing through brush. I'll sacrifice an extra second in drawing my handgun for the security of keeping it on my person. I also had Lobo build me one for my 63 Kit Gun that I like to carry when I'm plinking or potting ground squirrels.
