I have added a new holster to my collection. It was made by SD Myres. It is a Barton Special. This holster struck my fancy for a few different reasons.
1. I didn't have a Barton Special in my collection.
2. I like floral carved holsters and this pattern seems different from what I am used to.
3. It is leather wrapped instead of sewn. The wrapping is even different from what is normal to me. Instead of rawhide, it looks more finished.
4. It fits a "large" revolver (6 1/2 inch barrel). I don't think I have ever seen one of these made for a gun with a barrel this long. I haven't tried it yet. Seems to me like the gun might be too heavy for a rig like this. The paddle is not real large.
Another thing I noticed about this holster is the color. It seems like many of the ones made for the longer barreled guns are natural colored like this one. I have seen it posted here that Myres made these from 1940 through the 70's. This one must be from after 1957 since it is factory marked that it fits a S&W .44 Model 29 with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. It has two snaps, so it has some adjustability to it.
I know nobody has figured out who Barton was, but at some point, someone will. If you got one of these, post your pictures since we like to see them. Here is mine:

I think the second snap might be to snap the strap around the front of
the holster instead of over the hammer, for when you think you might
need to get it out quick.

We do believe that the non-Tex mark is 'late', and those with an inked number even later, perhaps circa 1970 whilst Harlon Webb was running the saddlery; but before 1975 when Col. Spurrier took it on.
And we do believe that we know who Barton was, covered in an earlier thread. Because his name also appeared on capgun toy holsters in Myres' time, we think he was the character 'Buzz' Barton, played by actor William A. Lamoreaux b. 03 Sep 1913 d. 20 Nov 1980. Film and rodeo star who has listed in IMDB internet movie database.

I knew that "Buzz Barton" had been brought up in association with the Myres Barton Special holster, but I didn't think we had definitely decided that he was "the" Barton. I did find this just now and thought it might be of interest. It is difficult to see in my screenshot and is from the January 1934 Boy's Life on page 52. Here is a link where you Amy be able to see it better:

Correct. The retention straps with two snaps were pretty common. When the primary concern was retention the strap was snapped down over the holstered revolver. When the need to use the revolver was more imminent the strap could be relocated around the front of the holster and snapped down so it was out of the way.

Say, that Boy's Life reference is super! Agree that we don't 'know' that the Barton Special was named after the Buzz Barton character (he was not a person himself) it's just all we have, for now :-). Right time period though.

Love that holster, Bruce. That is the size that I would expect to work great with that style holster. I might be afraid my 6.5 inch barreled gun might end up on the pavement.

I think I would feel comfortable with one up to a 4" barrel or maybe a commander length 1911.
