Let’s talk holsters...
Hey all!
I’m looking for recommendations for a solid holster to hold a smith and Wesson 4006, has anybody carried one? What is your favorite holster/pistol combination? Looking forward to a good thread

It all depends on what type of holster you want. Shoulder ? IWB ? OWB ?
I have a few Alessi holsters both IWB and OWB and they've stood up to use well and are extremely well built.
Only shoulder rig I have experience with is a Galco for my 1911.Also a decent choice.

Thanks for the reply, I’m mostly looking for OWB use. It’s a heavy all steel gun (as you may know). Being that I’ll be carrying OWB it would be nice to have some sort of retention built into it.

On the rare occasion, I carry my 4006 it in a DeSantis Yaqui Slide. I use the Yaqui for many of my heavy Gen3s when I carry OWB in the winter months.
I need to add that I use an excellent gun belt from Hughes Holsters with the Yaqui. I believe the gun belt is as important as the holster with the heavy Gen3. Also, the Yaqui allows me to carry strong hand or in an uncanted cross draw position when I spend most of the time seated or belted in a car.

Good stuff! That Yaqui is cool, looks light weight and low profile. I’m not sure if I’m just paranoid, but I always like the gun to be “locked” into the holster via some form of retention when I carry OWB. It would be a damn shame for someone to grab my firearm off my hip and do harm to me or anyone else with it.

There is a tension screw on the Yaqui which gives me plenty of retention so I don't even consider it an issue any more than when I carry in an old strap over the holster.
I use this in the winter when the firearm is concealed with one or more layers of clothing. I would be fighting to retain my gun while causing extreme pain in the person trying to take it from me.
The Yaqui is not for everyone but I like it because it is so versatile and accommodate many different pistols.

The way the OP asked the question is going to generate a hundred answers that disagree with the need. But the OP has done a great job of clarifying so all will be well. Always ask for style vs brand, THEN ask for brand.
When you want an OWB that will carry weight and give you confidence that the pistol will stay in it, then the pancake style is your best bet. I'd suggest that you avoid the top-heavy styles. How do you tell? The lowest they can ride with an auto is with just enough clearance above the belt for the second finger knuckle. I find that ideal for all barrel lengths and deals optimally with the big mags (the original pancake was created when revolvers were king and single-stacks were a distant 40th place, and the double stack M59 at 100th).
That said, all pancakes that ride low enough that you don't rely on your belt to hold it all upright, will work great for your situation. Two that I did, one for Aker and one for DeSantis, I believe are the best of the original genre. The one (called the Maltese Falcon) that I make now is very complex and expensive, because it pleases me :-).
