Exclamation How many holsters?

Unless in an open carry state, why would one want a holster for any guns except their carry (concealed carry) guns?

Unless one is a pro shooter participating in matches.

I have at least one holster for everything. Even if a person is in a no-open-carry state, they can be handy at the range. And it's not just pro shooters that do matches. Sometimes I have a match all by myself.

I own Holsters mainly for my Every Day Carry Guns and the ones that I occasionally walk in the woods with or use in shooting competitions. Other than holsters that I inherited from my Dad, I don't seek out holsters for guns that never get carried and I don't have holsters for at least half of my collection - because I never carry them.

To your point, I don't really get why some want holsters for guns they never carry - but possibly to them a holster just might complete "the package". Hey, if it makes them happy and they can afford it - to each his own.

BTW, I do usually buy Wrenches, Sockets and other tools in Sets and while I do use most of them, there are always sizes that never get used.

I've got holsters for guns I never carry because there is always a remote chance I may need a holster for one of those guns.

I don't buy as nice of holsters for those guns but always want a holster for a gun except for maybe my MKIII target pistol which will never be carried.

I have a ton of holsters and a ton of handguns. Montana is an open carry state, but, the only time I open carry is during hunting season, during and on my way to or from hunting. Oh, yea and at the range.

Can't you open carry while hunting in most states? How about on private land?

I know I am spoiled, living in a state that is reasonable and sane when it comes to guns.

I have a box full of holsters that came with gun purchases.. My IWB holsters can be used with several different guns, same with my open carry holsters...

Gives me the choice to carry any gun that I want to. (did you get that, "I want to")

Not all of us stand at a gun range with a table to set the guns on. I hike in a National Forest daily and practice all types of shooting skills.

Default well.....

I may be crazy, but, I have many holsters for each of my 8 sidearms.… I am as much addicted to the gun leather as I am the guns... go figure.

That said I have but 1 holster for my Glock 17.... you cannot dress that thing up.... period.

And then some of us strange folks collect vintage holsters for the history, craftsmanship and art that they represent.

If I could answer the question you could call me sanephil instead of
crazyphil. Generally, I collect holsters for the reasons L&O said, but
there are other reasons too. I try to only collect holsters that I have a
gun to fit in it, but every now and then I make a mistake. I've been
giving guns away to friends and family, so I am down to about a dozen
now. Probably have at least a dozen holsters for each gun. Some of
them have never been worn, and may never be worn. Open carry is
ok in Idaho, but only time I carry open is in the hills.

I would ask why would anyone have only ONE holster for each handgun they own.

Handguns must have holsters. I have holsters for all, some multiple times, and holsters for guns I don’t have.

I have 1 to 3 for each handgun. Plenty of these are for concealed carry of j-frames. I have lots more for simple "cowboy" wear. Even though I am not a cowboy, in Oregon we are still free enough to open carry in most places. Other holsters have distinct purposes. Lets say you are hiking or fishing in the back country---sometimes I like to carry it concealed, sometimes open, and other times in a shoulder rig whether concealed or open. Besides the 2 legged predators, we still have plenty of the 4 legged variety out here that can do plenty of damage or simply eat you for lunch. I have yet to see anyone carrying a rifle or handgun in a zippered case while out in the woods.

Oh ya one other good reason. I have found that leather really cuts down on "safe dings". While I don't store blued handguns in leather, most of mine are stainless and prefer to have a snug leather wrapper while being stacked in the safe.

I own nearly 60-70. Some were bought used at a great price. Some were bought new. Most are for guns I own, and some are for guns I hope to someday own. I like having a variety to choose from depending on occasion and where it will be worn. Some are conceal. Some are for outdoor use, and some are just because I like carrying in and around my home.

Given the fact I sold a bunch of stuff a few years back I have WAY too many. mostly 4"& 6" n frame. All good leather stuff. Need to have a driveway sale. Virginia has been open carry for over 400 years.

Ah. You didn't know that pistols are holster accessories, not the other way 'round? Seriously. I have heaps of holsters and NO guns.

I have LOTS of holsters for my pistolas....Why would I want to carry my pistolas in my hand when hunting/walking/on the 4 wheeler/on the tractor/fishing/driving etc. OP's statement doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

OP's question makes a lot of sense to me. Some of the answers helped a little. But almost all of my guns are carry guns, and I have more than one holster for most, partly for different seasons, but also a fair number of LH holsters. Came in kind of handy when I broke my right wrist.

Like many of us, I have several boxes of holsters.

If I go to the range I want an OWB for convenience. I switch out to the IWB for appropriate practice with any carry gun to practice draws but a OWB sure makes target practice more pleasant. Plus it's usually hotter than the dickens at the range and the gun eventually gets all sweated out IWB.

As for your MKIII why wouldn't you want a holster. I just ordered a double mag pouch for mine. I want to have a reload handy just in case I'm attacked by more pine cones than I was expecting. And sometimes those cans are difficult to put down with 10 rounds.

Ask your wife why she needs more than one pair of shoes!?! She only has one pair of feet, right?

Seriously, holsters are made differently for different tasks. Even the same gun might use different holsters for different carry options. One snub nose revolver might be carried in a shoulder holster, an IWB holster, a belt holster, an ankle holster, or a pocket holster. Multiply by many guns, and you end up like Crazyphil!!

Best Regards, Les

I own a holster for any gun that is suitable for carry. I may never actually carry that gun, but I can if I want to.
In my case, I have a few good holsters for multiple guns. After all, I only carry one gun at a time. For example: I have two or three good holsters for say a 4" K-frame. One IWB and one, maybe two OWB as needed. But I've got about a dozen guns that'll fit it. That way, if an odd mood should strike to carry something different, I know I have a holster to fit it.
Similarly, I have a couple of good holsters for J and N frames along with several semi-autos that can be used for many different guns.
However, there are the cases of guns I only have one of. But like I said at the beginning, if its suitable for carry, I have a holster for it.

I have at least 3 holsters for each carry gun I own. They all serve a purpose and they all get used. Shoulder holster while driving, IWB for summer conceal carry, and OWB strong side hip when woods walking, and finally pocket holsters for those cute little 9mm single stacks I've become so fond of.

As a Deputy Sheriff in the 70s I transported prisoners accross the western states from California to Canadian line and east through Montana and Nevada. These transports were felons and were secured in the back seat of a Crown Victoria sedan with a metal screen between the front and rear seat. My carry weapons were a Lt. Wt Commander 45 in a Jackass horizontal shoulder holster as primary and a Colt Cobra in an ankle holster as backup. Learned the value of wearing a shoulder rig while driving long distances. The ankle rig was nice for driving also, and was easy to grab from a seated position.

For every holster there is a reason!

You can never have too many guns OR holsters.
I'd bet I have 6 or more holsters for 25% of my guns, J's in particular. Sometimes I've bought multiples of one design - one each for different guns - if the price was right. I went crazy with a Don Hume closeout site on eBay a few years ago.... must've bought a dozen of them, plus ammo carriers. I think I have somewhere over 100 holsters all together.
I'm looking at having shoulder surgery in a while, so I've been planning ahead, buying lefty holsters for the recovery time.
Heh.... Saying you only need one holster per gun is like saying you only need one pair of underwear.
IM-not-so-HO, of course.

I don't have as many holsters as handguns, but I have a holster that fits each handgun, since I have multiple handguns with frames that are similar enough to share holsters.

Default Holster needs, wants, buy decisions?

I USED TO HAVE a great gun buy process worked out with my wife (unsuspecting of course) when browsing yard sales, flea markets, antique stores (her passion).

I would spot an old basket weave, usually black, mostly needing some TLC (and tons of saddle soap), didn't matter the barrel length or style, or even strong side matching me. The object was "Honey what do you think? Does this look like its worth $5.00?" Usual response: "looks OK condition wise but the belt loop looks too small (or large) for your gun belt but see if they'll take $3.00". NEVER: "why" or "what gun does that fit".

So we all know the Great Rule of Holsters: One MUST own the proper gun to fit the proper holster!!!

Off on the hunt I go....... Ah......those were the good ol days cause now a days the only surplus holsters I see anywhere is plastic, or Kydex, or police turn ins, with retention level attachments and doo-dads that require a PHD in Mechanical Engineering to get the dang pistol out and in service. Not much left for revolvers (at least ones that I want).

Be honest about it: Sometimes when the smell of Hoppes # 9 gets a little intense and you've fondled enough of your guns, the smell of good leather being massaged with your favorite treatment is almost just as alluring. Agree?

When you put several holsters in a drawer, they seem to breed and produce offspring.
No- wait- that’s a good thing!
That explains why I have so many holsters.
That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

MHO, guns are for carrying (for shooting), and holsters are an integral part of that equation!

creekman, you are either new to handguns, super thrifty, excessively practical, or a combination of the three.

Since I long ago settled on the handguns I carry, I've also settled on the holsters I use.

The only handguns I carry are either a 1911 or a M38.

Since I don’t use a holster for the M38, my holster inventory consists of a couple Del Fatti iwb holsters and a Milt Sparks AT1.

A handgun must be carried in your hand if you do not have a holster. All of my handguns are carried at one time or another.

More concerning to me is the drawer of holsters that no longer have guns.

Leather is fun to work with, and I like my handguns to have a choice of clothing when leaving the house. Leather has different colors, for coordinating with pants or shirts, and bolsters can be made to ride differently and in different spots, avoiding unsightly wear marks on underwear. 10oz leather for outdoors and 7/8 oz for formal events. Some with bling, mostly plain and functional. Every gun should have several holsters.

Let me rephrase it for you-
I’m left handed.
If I saw a LH Myres holster that I liked, not too terrible expensive -
I would buy it even if I wasn’t sure what gun it fitted.

I have more leather than a rancher.

When I fish, I carry in a holster that's different from concealment. I need a handgun readily accessible that doesn't get in the way of my picturesque casts, which are of Norman Rockwell quality.

Fish cheat which forces fishermen to lie ;-)

Over the years I've bought and sold guns.... but I always hung on to the holsters... cus I learned long ago they added almost nothing to the trade/sale value.

I've also bought "used" holsters that are, at worse, anib.........for penny's on the dollar.... including more than a few from custom holster makers like Milt Sparks. I've bought close out holsters from Wilson Combat for my Beretta's for as little as $.50 on the dollar....a couple were even duplicates of ones I like and use a lot........ lets me have one at home and one at the cabin

After 40 years........I've got a "Big Box -O -Holsters"

A lot of holsters work for many guns I own...... 4" K-frames think Model 18,15, 19 and 66. Others work for 2, 2 1/2 and 3" K-frames think Model 10, 15,19, 64,65,66..... some for concealed carry; some for a hike in Penn's Woods. I don't conceal carry my Kit- guns ... Models 34 and 60 but I want a couple of field holsters.....

While I conceal carry 90% of the time IWB with a Milt Sparks open top holster....... for woods bumming or riding a ATV (with a Model 66 or L frame) in Penns woods I want a thumb break holster...... I prefer a Bianchi 111 Cyclone cross-draw for this.... but a Bianchi 5BH behind the hip is nice if I want to be more low profile

The same holsters often work for 6906s,3913/14s and PC shorty 9s. I've got several Bianchi "Pistol pocket" holsters almost all bought used for less than $10.... even though I tend to conceal carry these guns in Sparks Summer Specials or Executive Companion holsters
