Default GOT A TOOFER DEAL!

Surfing on the bay I came across a TOOFER DEAL. 2 holsters,
a Hunter and a Colorado Saddlery both for 39 shipped. What
a deal. I never had a Colorado Saddlery, so I "accidentally'
pushed the Buy Now button.

Don't trust those fit charts. On the left is the Hunter. It is
marked 1100 40 OE. The Hunter chart tells me that size 40
fits the Colt Peacemaker with 4.75" barrel. Well the gun does
go in the holster, but it's too loose. Loose causes wear on the
gun's finish. I took OE to mean Open End? The muzzle end is
open. The good news is it fits my New Model Super Blackhawk
.44 Magnum perfectly.

On the right is the Colorado Saddlery. Someone had etched
M&P 4" on the back, and it's true. It is a perfect fit for my
4" model 10 (previously known as M&P). It is a basic field
style holster. Thin leather. If it were a Lawrence it would be
called a Challenger.

I cleaned them up and shined them a bit and posted them
so you could enjoy them. And they don't stink!

PS you can click on the image once or twice to enlarge the
photos.

Darn it, I hate to have anything to say because I post too often.

But I'm reminded that turnerriver recently sent me a document that indicates it was Van Scoyk of Colorado Saddlery who founded Hunter, the Hunter company claims in '52. Odd decision given that C.S. was incorporated only just a bit earlier, in '46, and itself was founded in reaction to the sale of Heiser to the Denver Dry Goods in '45. Colorado Saddlery later occupied one of Heiser's old buildings on Market St. Its own building, built I understand in 1970, still stands (Heiser's 15th & Wynkoop building across the street from it, burned to the ground circa 2000) and is a retail center now.

I noticed on Hunter's web page that they make holsters for other
businesses, and they listed some of them. One of them was/is
Colorado Saddlery.

By the way, you can't post too much or too often for me.
Every time you post I learn something.

Oooohhhhhh, the info from turnerriver, a letter authored by the son of Pershing Van Scoyk to a customer, was trying to say that Hunter Co. was founded specifically to take over the manufacture and marketing of the Colorado Saddlery's gunleather line. It took a bit more research, and putting pieces of the puzzle together, and then parsing the sentence in the letter, to work that out finally. The wife didn't marry me for my brains :-).

Which also helps to explain the progression of what has been known as the 'hunter style holster' that Heiser has claimed to have invented (and the snap-off version by Brauer): Heiser to Colorado Saddlery to Hunter. Heiser being gone, and C.S. having retired from the gunleather biz in favor of Hunter, that left Hunter to become associated with the design in modern times.

Nowadays the market for general-fit, low-price holsters would be dominated by Uncle Mike's for example.
