After hanging in the fresh air and sunshine for a week I brought
it in. Rubbed it down with Black Rock Leather N' Rich, and gave
it a shine with Fiebing's Tan Coat. If you tried you could tell it
once belonged to the Marlboro Man, but we got most of the stink
out. If I had it to do over again, and I might sometime, or if you
have a similar problem, here is what I believe is effective:
Warm water, a few drops of DAWN, & scrub it with a sponge.
Cover with baking soda, inside & out, and let it sit for a week.
Hang it in the fresh air & sunshine for another week.
And that is the rest of the story.

By the way, with turnerriver's help we determined that it was
probably made for Colt's Scout Peacemaker. My Model 10
with 4" barrel fits well, but holster is a little long for it.

Outstanding! That'll do to wear to a barbecue.

You let it sit for two weeks? I've got a holster with the same smell that's been sitting in my garage for nearly a year. I've tried just about everything except the baking soda, even throwing it in the back of my truck on sunny days. I'm thinking that by next spring it will be ready for me to wear.

Some of those who commented on this process think that water is a no no.

But warm water and a few drops of Dawn, scrubbing with a sponge, just
kept getting brown stuff off. I don't know if it was old dye, polish, or
nicotine. The holster hasn't lost any color. As long as the brown kept
coming off I just kept up the procedure. Probably did that 3 or 4 times
before going to the baking soda.

I generally use warm water and Dawn on all the used holsters I buy.
Even if they don't stink, I want them to be clean before I put Black Rock
on them for conditioning.

Thank you Celtic Sire. Here are a few others that I would not
be ashamed to wear to the BBQ. 2 on left are Eubanks and 3rd
one is Idaho Leather. Royal Eubanks probably made all 3 of them
though. He was Eubanks before he sold to Pioneer, and then he
was Idaho Leather after the 5 year non-compete agreement
expired.
