Default Holster for ATV

What is the best type holster for use while riding ATV's? Plan on using it while hunting too.

Is there a holster that is easy on the finish? Might be using a nickel finish revolver some.

What type of pistol and how long is the barrel? I use an ATV to get around our farm with a chain saw or spray under brush. I carry a GP100 in a Simply Rugged Pancake. I am very pleased with both the revolver and the holster.

The holster builders on this forum with probably want to lynch me but I have yet to meet the holster that didn't wear a blued or nickel finished gun to some degree. Loose fitting leather or unlined kydex holsters are worst offenders IMHO. I would not carry a prized nickel S&W "safe queen" in any holster.

Riding on an ATV, sitting down, I find wearing a holster cross-draw is the most comfortable.

Lotsa good options available but the SR pancake already mentioned would be a good choice. Worn either strong side (with or without strap), crossdraw or chesty puller rig...
If concerned about finish wear, leave it (gun) at home.
ETA:
May not suit OP's needs but can also wear IWB with proper straps.
A pretty versatile holster...

I also use a Simply Rugged pancake, but I also use their Chesty Puller harness, that keeps my revolver or 10mm on my chest. It's never in the way like my hip & cross draw holsters can be. Prior to that, I used a Bianchi flap holster and a cartridge belt, with suspenders. Kept my 625 Mountain Gun pretty clean all those years riding miles & miles of ATV trails.

White Cloud you are right I'll save the nickel 29-2 for the range.

My ATV piece is a 5 inch 686 Talo.

Thanks for the suggestions and I'll check them out. I am leaning toward the chesty rig just not sure how they feel but it looks like it would be out of the way. Do you suggest the type with a flap or no flap? Thumb strap or no thumb strap?

Anyone carry a 5 incher with a crossdraw?

Interesting thread.

Does a seat belt on a RZR interfere with the chesty puller?

Hi there Alwaysneedshelp. I would be getting the strap. You can remove it if it is not needed. I always snap my revolver in with the strap. The Simply Rugged works great on a tractor also. I may be confused but I think you can carry the Simply Rugged cross draw also. One poster mentioned the Chesty Puller strap system. I am considering getting one of those for my pancake.

I find that I can hit better with a "service target" style magnum revolver than any other handgun in my collection. I have a variety of holsters for mine to allow carrying it in more places.

Here's a link to Western Images Leatherworks in Colorado and their Chest Rig holster.

Chest Rigs

Lately, this has been their most popular selling holster.

Interesting..... carries a lot like a Bianchi Cyclone cross draw... just higher.....

IMHO seems like a lot of extra straps w/o much upside unless you're carrying a long barrel (6-8"), heavy (X or N-frame) gun . Me I just carry a 3" 66 or 4" 686 most of the time

Default To the OP,

in my experience riding an ATV is usually dusty, muddy or some combination of the two.
I'm not sure I'd carry a nice nickel finish revolver out scooter riding, I don't own anything in nickle, so no experience w/ that.
I'd been looking at the Diamond D custom Leather chest holster. The price was holding me back, and I wasn't sure I'd like a chest holster as I almost always wear a windbreaker or jacket. I didn't know if the gun would be accessible etc.
In the mean time I was gifted a Kenai Chest Holster to fit my L frame Smiths. It's a kydex holster w/ nylon staps. I've never used anything but leather for holsters and wasn't sure I was going to like it at all. Well I like it a lot. The straps are wide enough to be comfortable and w/ plenty of adjustment to get the gun to ride where you want it to be. I use it with a 686 w/ a 3 in BBL and a 681 w/ a 4 in BBL. The holster was made for the 3 inch, but the 4 inch doesn't stick out far enough to be a bother.
The gun is very secure, it fits in w/ a definite "snap".
This is just my experience and I'm not affiliated w/ either company mentioned above.
YMMV

Simply Rugged pancake holster strapped to my chest with their Chessty Puller rig. Cartridge loops for extra shells slide on to the harness. Works great for me. Prior to that I used a Bianchi flap holster for my 45 colt Mountain Gun. Use reason & common sense and it'be fine. Very easy to grab one handed and put into action.

I carry a 4" Stainless Security Six .357 with Herret Grips in a Bianchi leather thumbreak strong side holster when I ride my Yamaha Grizzly four wheeler. My other favorite woods gun is a Browning HP 9m/m I carry in a Bianchi nylon thumbreak holster, hammer down on loaded chamber.

Thumbs up

Well I guess I have to be different.

My old Mod 18's "holster" on my old kawasaki mule is a 50 cal ammo can bolted to the floor.

Inside the can is the rimfire and a cloth ammo belt for a 410 shotgun. On the belt is a Hunter brand holster thats been cut off on the bottom.

I just don't have the Tacticool thing sorted out yet BUT I do own a Glock so stay tuned!

GF

The classic widow maker Bianchi was my suggestion too. Old, slow and ugly, but very good for protecting revolvers or auto pistols. A heck of a field holster, including on the belt or the chest tanker style.

I have an El Paso Tanker for my 4.2-inch Ruger SP .357 that's a quick on & off, and I typically use a shoulder rig from Galco for most heavy revolver carry outside clothes for quick access.
That includes a Ruger GP .357 and one for a 4-inch Smith 629 that can also handle my 4-inch Ruger .44 Mag Redhawks.

I like instant access & can't always get that from a belt holster.
Heavy revolvers also tend to drag my pants down, a shoulder rigs carries the weight better.
