I have always been enamored with vintage holsters. Crazyphil and turnerriver are always showing off their finds so I thought I would jump in on the show and tell....

gnfrk, those are some very interesting holsters. As time marches on so does the consideration of what is vintage. Some define antique as 100 years or more old and vintage as 20 to 100 years old, that means that all 20th Century holsters would be considered vintage.
Here’s another Tulsa find, I have examples of this Lawrence model but this is the first floral carved one I’ve seen. It was made for the Colt Detective Special/Agent/Cobra revolvers.

Great find. Is that Tulsa find from this April? My brother, Dad and I have gone every year for the past 10 years or more and my brother and I even longer. This year however we did not go due to lots of family events that had us all traveling for many weekends around it and since we are spread across Missouri and Nebraska it was just another weekend we were all going to be traveling, the biggest factor however was my daughter getting married in May so funds are much tighter. My brother and I though, are committed to going in November.

Sorry for the divergence. I love walking around Tulsa and finding great gems. So much to see. It is a great show.

This IWB holster is probably well over a 100 years old. It seems to be made of Oil Cloth with a neat hook for over your pant waist. I got it with a New Departure Safety Hammerless S&W Revolver.



Pocket holsters used to be often used in the good old days. This one evens has a little decoration with a .32 S&W Safety Hammerless.



How about another with a different stamping holding a S&W .32 Double action.



Some of the Police Officers that I trained with in the middle 1960's still used swivel holsters like this with their S&W model 10 or M&P revolvers. The range procedure was to stabilize the holster with your weak hand and unsnap and draw with the strong hand.

Back in 1961 I was in the U. S. Army in West Germany. I discovered a copy of "Chic Gaylord HANDGUNNER'S GUIDE" in the Base Library and read it and reread it and reread it. What a great book with a lot of knowledge. When I got home my first revolver was a S&W 3" model 36 which Chic recommended over the 2" snub. I searched and found a copy of the Handgunner's Guide and then wrote to Chic and asked for his recommendation for a concealment holster for my 3" model 36. He recommended a Super Sleuth holster with a matching belt only around $20. I was only making $1.25 an hour at the time so I put that on the back burner for a later order but sent him a $5 check for one of his IWB holsters. I waited and waited but at the time Chic was going out of business. I never got my IWB holster and felt lucky that I had not ordered the Super Sleuth. After I got over that I would look for a Chic Gaylord holster whenever I saw a box of holsters in a gunshop. I only ever found one. It was this Q-4 Dragoon cross draw holster for a 6" K Frame. It worked well but I had convinced myself that any holster carried openly needed to be on the strong side. I soon sold it to another holster fan. I am still looking for another Chic Gaylord Holster.

A nice vintage holster is the Bianchi model 45 designed by Jeff Cooper prior to 1966. Designed for a cocked and locked 1911 45acp. It has a forward rake and the pistol is held by fly off safety strap. Jeff Cooper reported that he had made and had photographed quick draw hits in 1/3 second. My example that I let get away from me has a replaced safety strap.

I'm gonna begin with this O. F. Ball holster for a 3 1/2-inch N-Frame Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum. The maker was from my home town of Fort Worth, Texas.



I like these photos. I like this holster. I like the big 3 1/2-inch .357 Magnum revolver. I admit to really liking totin' this combination, even if both holster and revolver are vintage.






I didn't know I had a Brill-ness, but one snuck up on me. To my only barely educated notion, Brill holsters are everything they're cracked up to be by many gun leather aficionados. The workmanship, fit, and usefulness of any Brill holster above a relic grade piece just has to be experienced in person to appreciate. Here are all the Brill holsters on hand except for a recent addition given me by a relative. I haven't even photographed it yet. Perhaps I can photograph it and stick it up here tomorrow.





With the handguns they fit.

I like the classic Jordan Style Holsters and used them by various makers as my Police Uniform Holster for many years until Department Regulations spelled out Exactly what style holster every officer had to carry while in uniform. There was a few years that I could carry what ever I wanted for a service pistol and I chose to carry a S&W model 39-2 9mm. I saw this BIANCHI model 100A and my model 39-2 fit beautifully. I wore this holster for a couple years until a new Chief specified that we all had to wear modern double action revolvers 38 Special or 357 Mag.

I’m not into vintage leather that much but I do like some of the holsters. These 2 are totin .44’s.
Carved is bucheimer for 5” and other fits 4” perfectly.

Good thing it wasn't high noon in the middle of the street for you'd have got me for sure. You're faster on the trigger, you are.

He who hesitates is lost. At least he doesn't get the neato Brill hoster.

Wonder what it fits? I dithered over whether it'd been dyed all while speculating that it was perhaps a fairly uncommonly seen style of Brill. Perhaps a department issued holster?

This Model 1902 S&W and shoulder holster belonged to my paternal grandfather. In the early 20th Century, he owned a dry goods store in Crittenden, Kentucky, and used this gun and rig to walk his day's proceeds to the bank a few blocks away from the store. No maker's name on the holster.



...and this is an original U.S. Model 1912 swivel holster, surrounded by original M1911 pistols - Colt, Springfield Armory, Remington UMC and A.J. Savage slide. The leg strap on the holster is a reproduction.

It’s an original black holster and I’m often the one it got away from. As to what it fits, it’s a very small holster, I’ve tried a pre-war I frame and a little 1930’s Colt Police Positive .32, both don’t seat as well as I think they should. It’s definitely for a small double action revolver, maybe a top break. Whatever it was made for wasn’t in it for long, it hasn’t seen much use.

That's way cool.

I thought that black Brill looked like it would be appropriate for a small revolver. I was guessing a Colt Police Positive Special. If a Colt Police Positive seems too large then it's hard to say. A Colt New Pocket or Pocket Positive is really a Police Positive with an abbreviated grip frame. As far as I know the frame size is otherwise the same.

Had promised to take a photo or two today so here is the latest Brill to be acquired and for me personally, the most important vintage holster I have. It had belonged to an uncle I thought a lot of. It had always housed a Colt Artillery Model Single Action Army when I was a kid. My dad said that my uncle bought the Colt and the holster for $5 in 1948 while they were up in Oklahoma on a fishing trip.

A year ago I saw one of my "huntin' cousins" at a family get together and had asked him to bring along his dad's old Colt just for fun. As a kid I remember it and recall shooting it. Either the Colt Artillery Model .45 or a Smith & Wesson Model 15 also belonging to my uncle was the first handgun I ever fired one summer in 1968. I got to shoot both on two different occasions that summer. I hadn't seen the Colt since the very early 1980s. He brought it along and the holster too. I remember seeing the holster with the rawhide cord wrapped around it as a kid, but never noted the holster's maker or if the Artillery Model properly fit it.

A few weeks back my cousin and his wife came here for a weekend visit and he brought the old Colt and holster again. We were again looking at the Colt and holster when he said he was turning the holster over to me as I had a Colt with a barrel length that properly fit. I was touched by the gesture.

My commercial Colt Single Action Army .38-40 in my uncle's Brill holster with the other Brill Single Action Army holster next to it.




The holster when I saw it in March last year. As may be seen it was very dried out and needed attention. I still have the leather thong and am of a mind to put it back on the holster "just 'cause." It was present when I was a kid and won't hurt a thing to be kept on it that way.




While my cousin was in we went to the local gun club range and held a Span Am/Philippine Insurrection Colt revolver shoot-fest. His Artillery Model, my Colt Model 1901 .38, and my Colt Model 1909 .45.

All guns gave a good account of themselves on target. The .38 is a real wheezer, both revolver design and cartridge, but the two .45 caliber Colts are substantial.

I got this Audley holster just because it was old. The patent date was Mar. 3, 1908.



I got this older BIANCHI left hand holster to try the Cavalry Draw with my Great Western Sherriff model but soon gave up on the idea.

The H.H.Heiser model 125 shoulder holster came in numerous sizes. I used to have a S&W Model 1913 type 2 .35 S&W. I found this Heiser model 125 that worked very well with the first S&W Semi Auto.

The Berns-Martin Holster is fast and protects the revolver. This 3" model 19-3 rides well in this late model holster.


The Bianchi model 27 is the next generation of the Berns-Martin Holster. This one for a 4" S&W N frame was my duty holster for a time.
