rehab dye query
I have what should turn out to be a nice Heiser belt. The main body of the belt looks good, a nice dark brown. The tongue area has apparently been through the buckle so many times, most of the surface color is worn off the wrinkles and it's kind of a fuzzy tan. I'm thinking of dyeing that area, then BlackRocking the whole thing.
Question:
Fiebing's alcohol-based dye , or oil-based dye?
I have had no experience with either. Any caveats would be welcome.

Really, you should've provided a pic. But as to your question, of the two the alcohol based dye gives the best, most predictable result. Now . . . Let's see you try to pick the ideal brown (you didn't ask).

Red, thanks for the info.
Ideally, I would have found my camera by now and have posted a lot of pictures; ain't happened yet. Didn't figure that asking which color would be worth much without picture.

additional query
I'm figuring on picking the dye whose color on the charts comes closest to the good areas of the belt, then diluting the dye and using several coats (drying 24 hours between)to sneak up on the matching hue. Since the MSDS sheet on Fiebing's dye reducer shows it's really only isopropyl alky, I'll dilute with that.
Any warnings / suggestions from anybody?

I cleaned it with saddle soap; next day I lightly swabbed with 99% alcohol the areas to be dyed. Then while damp with the alcohol, I q-tipped the small spots and swabbed the large tongue area with Fiebing's dark brown dye diluted to 50% with alcohol.
After another day to dry, I touched up any remaining lighter areas with the same diluted dye. Day later, treated with BlackRock.
When I get the photo program figured out, I'll attach.
