Default A Mystery

I acquired a new in the package Hawes Monarch holster. It is black basket weave and the only marking is on the back, number 1106. I tried matching it to the Hunter vintage chart and a M60 is listed as this number, I think. A M60 does fit perfectly in it. I have a bunch of other new Hawes holsters and am going to compare them to the Hunter charts, as I am starting to think that the Hawes Monarch holsters were contract made by Hunter. I know, pictures, but have to learn that process one of these days. crazyphil has instructed me, just don't seem to have time right now, too many irons in the fire.

Hawes are made by Hunter. I Googled Hawes holsters and came up with
a Hunter chart that lists Hawes 1100 series. It appears that 1106 should
fit Charter's Undercover, S&W's model 36, and other similar guns with
2" +or- a quarter inch barrels.

I learned something! Thanks Phil.

Did not know there were Hawes holsters (knew about the Hawes pistols) so naturally didn't know that Hunter made 'em :-).

Pictures someday will be most informative for us beginning holstorians.

That Western Marshall, of which you mention, made quite a splash when
it came out in the latter 1960s. Made by Sauer, predecessor to SIG Sauer.
High quality & low price. I just assumed Sauer was predecessor
to Sig Sauer. You know what happens when we assume?
"Yep, a purty good six shooter, but it ain't a Colt."

That leather looks interesting too.

This just isn't right! Sometime back when I acquired a number of Hawes holsters, some still in wrappers, as sold by Christe Gunworks years ago, I googled Hawes holsters and found nothing, zip. After all my investigative work, assumptions, etc. crazyphil comes up with the "chart" for Hawes holsters. I think Google must have just put the information on the internet since I looked. Yeah, that is it.

Actually it is a Hunter chart. The Hawes hosters are Hunter products.
Don't know why they named them Hawes, and I don't know what makes
the Monarch different. Maybe it's not. Does the one that you described
in your first post above have the hammer snap strap and the easy on
easy off strap around the middle?

The label says Hawes Firearms Co., located on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles. I know they sold the Hawes single action revolver back in the early sixties, and assume they contracted the holsters under the Hawes Royal Monarch brand. This particular is black basket weave and my M60 fits like a glove, no straps what-so-ever.

Ah. Well, then, somebody better post up some pics so we can all be sure; Hunter products have characteristic construction details dissimilar to all other makers (and vice versa).

The plot thickens. Somehow Kevin was able to get a few photos to me.
The holster that he describes, in his #1 post, a Hawes Monarch is marked
1106. It is the style of my Brauer Bros. shown below on the left, except
his is basket weave.

Hunter does have a line of holster called Hawes, within their 1100 series.
The Hunter I show, on the right, is their typical 1100. This one happens
to be 1100-39 because it is made for an S&W K frame with 2" barrel.
Were it made for the 2" J frame it would be 1100-6.

So we are dealing with two separate and different breeds of cat. Kevin's
Hawes Monarch may, or may not, have been made by Hunter. It is true
what he said in the beginning. It's a mystery.

Phil you've got us going in circles. First, pic of OP's holster and front and back, too. A 'looks like this but not' isn't good enough.

Then, pic of the chart or catalog you're looking at with the Hawes name. For now I'm left to expect that you're looking at a fitment chart, which is neither here nor there.

Then, an intelligent answer from someone, who may be even me :-).
