Default LET'S HAVE AN S.D. MYRES SHOW

You could pick up just about any gun magazine back in the 1960s
and find an ad to get a catalog from S. D. Myres. The ad shown
below left is from a 1964 Guns Magazine. They probably sold
thousands of their famous model 614, shown in the ad, but try
to find one now. Not too easy.

Over the years I have found 2 models 614, as shown 2nd from
left. The one on the left is for an N Frame, and for a K Frame
on the right.

3rd from left is a model 624, with both a "dog ear" and a
retention strap.

4th from left are two Border Patrol holsters. Askins model on
the left and Jordan's model on the right.

5th from left is a little carved J Frame holster with "dog ear".
I don't know, but would guess it would also be a model 614?
CORRECTION: I just looked at a page from Myres catalog that
turnerriver provided for us on another thread, and found that
the little one, 5th from left, is probably a model 624.

Myres is my favorite maker. They embody the old and new West and I particularly like the historical connection with law enforcement.
Great idea, Phil, how do you keep coming up with great ideas ?

John, I have a lot of ideas. Many of them do not turn out too well.
Once in a while I hit a great one. I guess the answer to your question
is volume.

Beautiful carving. I think it's a model 614.
The retention strap looks like an after market at on.

One of my favorites is this pigskin lined for a 4" N frame. It came with a lined two-gun belt which has a magazine holder for what I assume to be 1911's built into it.

Here is a little dog eared Myres for a 3.5" N frame. It was in sad shape when I received it, as someone had cut the welt down so that something else might slide into it.
Doc Barranti graciously restored it to its former glory. You can see photos of the process in John's "Holstory" book.

Bruce

Here's my prized S.D Myers holster, courtesy of turnerriver. I was fortunate to win it at one of our S&WCA Symposium auctions a few years ago. It is for a 7-1/2" Registered Magnum.

The second holster is spectacular. The swivel knife work, in particular the decorative cuts, are as good as I've ever seen. Really nice.

Here's my Myres for a Commander Length .45. It's shown with my Wilson Professional and an extended magazine. The belt loop is cut at an angle so it rides with the grip up making it possible to conceal the extended mag.

Default Uncataloged Myres Ranger Threeperson's

This was my first SD Myres holster and may be my favorite. I had been looking for a Myres Jockstrap Holster for quite awhile. When I saw this one, it appeared to be a different style than the ones I had seen before. I tried to find one like it online, before the auction ended, with no luck. The seller, who got it from an estate sale, said the former owner had a K22 in it.

I won the auction and before I had even received it, I contacted turnerriver for some expertise. I showed John a picture (he had already seen it) and asked him about it. He said that as far as he could tell it was an uncatalogued holster, and Myres called their jockstrap style holster, a Ranger holster. He checked catalogs from 1930 up into the 1970's and there was no match. So, the holster is a Ranger Threepersons model. Thank goodness for John or I would still be confused on the style! When I got the holster, I found the previous owner was incorrect on what it fit. Instead of fitting a K22, it is actually a perfect fit for a Colt SAA with a 5 1/2 inch barrel.

The fantastic deep relief floral carving on this holster and it's uniqueness make it my favorite. Here are some pictures:

Default Myres Model 445 holster

About 5 years ago, I had been looking for a Myres Jockstrap holster for quite a while. I got my first one pictured in the above post, and very soon after, I found this one. This is a Model 445. It is fully lined and double loop laced. When I received the holster, I was amazed at the workmanship, and the thoughts of how time consuming it must have been to make, with all the lacing. I was hoping it would fit my 3 ½ inch Model 27, but it is too small. I believe it might be for a K frame gun with a 3 inch barrel. Here are some pictures of it:

Default Myres Model 770 holster

While I owned 2 Myres Jockstrap holsters, neither was what I considered a traditional Jockstrap style holster. My next one filled the traditional bill to me. It is a Model 999 and fits a S & W K frame revolver with a 6 inch barrel. The floral carving looks great on it. Here are a couple of pictures:
Larry

Update - I was incorrect in the identification of this holster. It is actually a Model 770. Thanks for the information, John.

Default Myres Model 777 holster

As many of you know, I love, love, love floral carved holsters made by the big three. The greatest majority of my collection falls in that category. My favorite holster pattern is the "Texas Jockstrap". My fourth one was different from the others.

For a time, I had my eye out for "snubby" holsters. They seem to be more difficult to find in good condition. Probably because many of these holsters were actually used, and used hard, while the ones for the larger guns might not be used as much. When I spotted this one, I hoped to win it, and luckily did. It is a Model 777. The holster is a leather lined SD Myres jockstrap holster made for a Colt Detective Special and it looks almost new. But, instead of a floral carved style, this one is plain. I like it a lot, and whoever bought it to carry their DS, was one cool dude.

Since it is in such nice condition, the head of detectives who originally bought it, must have received it as a retirement gift. That is my story and I am sticking to it!! Here are some pictures:

Default Myres Model 640 holster

While looking for snub nose revolver holsters, I found this one. It is a model 640, which is a Model 614 but it has a factory safety strap. It looks like it is etched 3 1/4 and .38 on the rear of the holster. I don't know if this was done by the factory, but it does seem like it will fit a gun with a 3 inch barrel. I don’t have a gun that fits it now. I have been told that it may be an I Frame gun. I put a dollar bill in the picture so you could determine it's size. It has "Tex." in the makers mark, so it is an older one. It is in really nice shape. I was lucky enough to get it for a good price because I spotted it right after it was posted with a nice BIN. Here are some pictures:

Larry, I was just discussing this model holster with Lestert357. I think that is
a model 770 holster as shown below. It was listed in the 1934 catalog for the K-22 & in later catalogs for the K-38 & the Colt Officers Model.

turnerriver

Thank you John. I am glad you corrected me. For some reason on that holster, I had not done an information sheet on it in my records and those were the only pictures I had. I only had the holster with a sticky note on it that I had written 999. You are such a valued source, and make this sub-forum the awesome place it is.

I think if you had ordered a 999 for a target sighted 6” K frame you would probably have received a 770.

I always admired the S.D. Myres floral pattern leather from the first time I saw a Daytona Beach P.D. officer equipped with it in the '70's.

Larry I found one identical to yours, same etching and tooling , just not as good condition wise, a few years ago at a small show.

It fits my 3 inch Ks perfectly.

Default Myres Lined And Laced Model 640

Early one morning while I could not sleep, I decided to scan eBay again. This jewel had just been listed with a reasonable BIN, so I had to jump on it. It is a calf lined SD Myres fully floral carved, double-loop edge laced holster with a dyed background and safety strap. Even the safety strap is laced. It is made for a Colt Detective Special with a 2 inch barrel and looks like previous owners may have slipped a gun in it a very few times. I am not sure what model it is. A Myres holster like this without the lacing is a model 640. I guess you could have maybe special ordered a calf lined model 640, with the full lacing and dyed background, as options. If any of you folks can give me a definite model number, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is my second Myres floral carved and fully edge laced holster. The reason this one is so special to me is that it is made for a snubby. I have seen a few holsters like this that were made for 3 1/2 or 4 inch barreled guns, but I had never seen one for a 2 incher. The maker's mark on the back says SD Myres El Paso. Since it is missing "Tex", it is a later made holster. Now sure how late though. This is my first dyed background holster too. Boy-o-boy, I have a weak spot for floral carved snubby holsters. Here are some pictures of just the holster.

Default Myres Model 614 holster

I really like SD Myres holsters. The quality and carving is superb on most that I have ever seen. This beautiful holster is a SD Myres Plain Clothes Quick Draw Style Holster Model #614. This model is a fully hand-carved, trigger set high for easy and quick draw and lock stitched. The loop fits a belt up to 1 1/2 inches.

The model #614 design was used extensively by the FBI in the past. This holster fits a Smith & Wesson K frame revolver up to a 5 inch barrel. It is in like new shape. Not sure what time frame it is from, but I think it has been determined by the knowledgeable people here, that since it has "Tex" in the maker's mark it is an earlier one. I think as crazyphil has stated before, I believe a bunch of these were sold over the years, but it is quite difficult to find one in great shape. Here are a few pictures:

Default Myres Barton Special holster

I have had this holster about 2 years. It was made by SD Myres. It is a Barton Special. This holster struck my fancy for a few different reasons.

1. I didn't have a Barton Special in my collection.
2. I like floral carved holsters and this pattern seems different from what I am used to.
3. It is leather wrapped instead of sewn. The wrapping is even different from what is normal to me. Instead of rawhide, it looks more finished.
4. It fits a "large" revolver (6 1/2 inch barrel). I don't think I have ever seen one of these made for a gun with a barrel this long. I haven't tried it yet. Seems to me like the gun might be too heavy for a rig like this. The paddle is not real large.

Another thing I noticed about this holster is the color. It seems like many of the ones made for the longer barreled guns are natural colored like this one. I have seen it posted here that Myres made these from 1940 through the 70's. This one must be from after 1957 since it is factory marked that it fits a S&W .44 Model 29 with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. It has two snaps, so it has some adjustability to it. I know we have discussed a few times who "Barton" was, but don't think we came to a definitive answer. Here are pictures of mine:

Default Myres Model 507 holster

I believe this is my last SD Myres holster. It is a pig skin lined Model 507 with retention strap, and I was lucky to get it from one of our 'holster guys" (Tom, better known as db here) on the forum. While I have a few Myres holsters, this is my first holster for a pistol (Colt Commander with 4.25 barrel). The floral carving is super nice and the holster looks brand new. Another thing I noticed about this holster is it is the lighter colored like my Myres Barton Special holster posted above. It also has 2 snaps on the safety strap too. This makes me believe maybe they were manufactured during the same time frame.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Colt Commander........yet. I did what I have done quite often, bought a holster for a gun that I do not own. I believe many folks on this forum have done that before though. Tom, I hope you don't mind if I show the forum the holster using your fine pictures. Thanks, again.

There have been a few nice Myres Barton Special holsters in this thread. Here is one that I chased for a very short time, that ended yesterday. I hope someone on the forum got it. It is similar to one of Bruce’s beauties.

I thought it was really nice, but I wish it had been made for a Detective Special, instead of a Chief Special. I may have chased it harder if so.😀 I know the DS is slightly larger than the CS, and I am not sure if a DS would have fit in that small holster. I think Barton Special holsters, like this one, would work perfectly with small frame guns.

I had my eye on that one for a while too. Being for a Colt was the deal breaker for me. I have a plain Barton for a Detective Special and it won't fit anything I own. Sure is a beauty though.
OBTW, I have a couple Commanders that would fit nicely into a Myres....Just sayin'
