That holster was made in the 1940’s or later as evidenced by the brown enamel snap. The model 457 was made for just about any revolver, that holster is certainly for a 2” revolver, probably a S&W Chiefs Special although a Colt Detective Special is a possibility. I can’t see any makers etching or inking on the back.

I have seen other Heisers like yours with the 5 up above the logo and
seller said it was for S&W J Frame. (Unless the 5 means something else)

Thank you. The one I really want is the WW2 era russet brown hip holster. Here is the post war version in black. If you know where I can find the brown/russet, that would be great. The WW2 model is the same as the post war except for the color and I believe the WW2 may not be marked. Here is what the back looks like on the WW2 model

Here is another real old Heiser. Same logo as yours has. The print below
the logo says D S 2 which I take to mean Detective Special with 2" barrel.
That must be right because my Colt's Agent fits just right. A J Frame is
a bit loose.

Thank you. I understand they offered it with and without the strap. I am wondering if the 5 meant it was with strap.
If yours had the thumb strap I would like to have had it!
The back on mine is quite worn so maybe at one time it had DS2 on it.

Does anyone else have an idea of what the 5 means above the number?

My WAG is that the number 5 is the group of guns the Model 457 will fit. In your case, I guess it would be revolvers with a 2 inch barrel like the Colt Detective Special. turnerriver can let us know if my guess is correct.

I haven’t been able to verify this but I believe that number identifies the maker. Heiser didn’t use a size code system other than the etched or inked information spelling out what the holster was made for. Here are two holsters, one for a .45 auto and one for a revolver, one basketweave, one plain, one russet, one black, both with the number 6. I believe that indicates that maker number 6 made both of these holsters.

I agree that the 5 might mean the employee who made the holster at
Heiser. I don't recall any other Heisers with the gun it was made for
stamped below the logo, like my D S 2 shown above. They should have
continued that practice. It could have saved us all a lot of searching.
