I have a small collection of WWII holsters, one to be a exact. It came with a Model 1917. Made by the Milwaukee Saddlery Co in 1944. That is the extent of my knowledge about this piece of leather.

You may have seen this before but my favorite GI Holster is this one.
Defense Acceptance Stamp inside #11377. and Stamped M R T JAN 1962. (Mildew Resistance Treatment) Made by BOYT

That’s an unusual holster, Jim. U.S. military leather goods were issued with black finish after about 1956, your MRT date of 1962 is very interesting.
Heiser had a U.S. contract apparently, here’s one of a few that I’ve run across over years of collecting.

This is the WW II variation of the holster made for the Colt/S & W 1917 Army revolvers, made to be worn on the right hip and butt to the rear rather than right side/butt forward.

I have two replicas (1 LH, 1 RH) of that holster, sold by International Military Antiques. Superb quality, if anything better than the original. IMA sells many types of replica military holsters.

In reference to the flap 1911 GI holster: did these come brown and black or just brown and some were dyed black by the troops ?

I took this picture for my book "101 Classic Firearms." That's an original 1913 G.I. swivel holster, long used as a model for reproductions by El Paso Saddlery.

Good question, complicated answer. The M 1916 holster was originally russet, the US services changed the specifications to black in the mid to late 1950’s. A number of existing holsters were blacked by servicemen and new black holsters were issued as well. The then new Air Force decided they wanted to be different, they started using black M 1916 holsters in 1950 & specified nickel finished hardware instead of brass. I’m not an expert on military holsters but have picked up some information from my friend ordnanceguy. He or some other expert may come along & correct me.

1944 M3 shoulder/chest holster, made by Enger-Kress. The leather was moldy when I got it, but it cleaned up pretty well and the straps are solid. The snap on the belt loop has been replaced. I use it when hiking, keep the weight off your waist and doesn't interfere with pack straps.

This one came out of the $5.00 junk box at a local gun shop. A good friend of mine snagged it and I traded him some ammo for it. It goes quite well with my S&W 1917.

USMC marked 1944 Boyt given to me by my wife's uncle who was Marine Force Recon. Battlefield promotion to Lt. in VN. Retired a major. Not bad for a country boy who enlisted out of high school.
The black shoe polish splotches added by him but otherwise the holster appears unworn.

Unsure about holsters but when I Joined Uncle Sam's Army in June 1959 I was issued Brown Boots as were all those in Basic training with me and we had to dye them black and keep them polished black.

I have a Boyt revolver flap in russet with no MRT or other date markings. I also have two more in black. One black version is a Boyt identical to the russet version but in what appears to be factory black top with black edging but russet interior and russet under the belt loop. The other black model is by Bolen Leather Products with black outer and inner leather but russet edging. I would love to find a history on this design.

I currently have three Model 1916 USGI flap holsters for 1911/1911A1.
Oldest is dated 1918 made by F.M. Hoyt Shoe Co., Manchester, NH, inspected by JJ Murphy. This holster has the wedge insert.
The other two are both Viet Nam era and one is Cathey Enterprises marked with Gov p/n 7791466. The other is Bolen Leather Products, marked with the same Gov. p/n 7791466.
I don't belt carry a 1911 so these holsters and web gear are in a bin in the attic waiting for an interested buyer one of these days.

I carried a Model 10 in a black M3 holster while in the Army. I wish I knew who made the holster, but back then I had zero interest in such things. Sad really, but I do remember the Model 10 was a -5 and had PC grips, so there is that. We all wore the M3 and also had a green nylon holster sewn on to our survival vest we carried the pistol in when flying.

The Army aviators from K-16 near Seoul Korea reported to the range to qualify wearing flight suits and a black leather vertical style shoulder holster with Model 10s. This was 1975 or 76. It was a regular shoulder holster not a M3 or M7 type. all leather construction including the strap that went over the left shoulder across the back. I have seen some original ones for sale and I have a commercial version in my collection. It amazes me the variety of holsters for revolvers in that time frame compared to the basic M1916 I used as an MP and later as an M60 gunner.
