*DONE* Flatware box to presentation case conversion
Hi folks,
Found a neat flatware case that’s about the right size for an N-frame Presentation case.
[Skip to post 21 to see final result, if process is not of interest]
Looks clean, right? Let’s destroy it.
Look ! Hidden meaningless assembly numbers ! This is familiar.

How is there so much cardboard? This is taking hours !
Finally.
I don’t understand how I filled two shopping bags with the detritus, but here we are.
Alright. The 57mm foam sits WAY proud.
The 30mm foam is too thin.
I have a solution, but the wife won’t like it....

Alright...after the last Yoga Mat Scandal, Mrs.X bought a replacement mat in hot pink. Certainly, that would dissuade one from ‘borrowing’ the mat for gun use.
Certainly.
With 2 layers of yoga mat, the 30mm foam is flush. Perfect.
Now would be a good time to address the one weak corner.
All taped up and ready to dry overnight. More tomorrow.

I like the idea of painters tape as a clamp. Makes it hard to squeeze the joint dry.

I have seen these cases in second hand and thrift stores and wondered how they would work as gun cases.

Where did that small piece of foam go?

What pink yoga mat? Once the foam covers it, the evidence is no longer visible! Oh no, I smell a conspiracy!

Decided to park a 629-1 in this one.
Due to the thickness of the case, we’re going to use some softer chair foam in the top section...or the case will never close.
Off to the photocopier to make a flat gun
Paint marker around the edge to give clean line

A little razor-knife work later, we have a gun-shaped hole.
A don’t like how deep the barrel sits.
Easy fix. Grab the cutout piece just removed.
Cut a piece off end
Cut that piece to half-thickness and place in recess
Perfect.

My $5 silverware box came from local Craigslist. The emblem on top was an old belt buckle and the handles were drawer pulls. I figured a matched pair deserved a case.
Sorry, I didn't document the process, just the end result.

Trace around a case so it fits nicely.
Rough cuts.
Taking shape
Here’s the idea:
Still lots to do, but we’re making progress !

Well, first hook broke due to my ham-handedness. I made another.
Also needed a bushing to provide relief from the box edge. Let’s cut down a .38spl case.

First, we only use domestically-produced cardboard as a surface protector.
If only there was some kind of adhesive-backed paper product one could use to mask off an area...a tape, perhaps...I don’t know what it would even be called...
Both panels glued. The VOCs are sky-high, so they’re placed under the, uh, fume hood.
I hope they dry before Mrs.X gets home. Otherwise I might need the foam to fashion some form of rudimentary mattress.

Dodged a bullet. And likely a frying pan.
Let’s flip them over and tidy up the fabric mess.
That shouldn’t bunch up as much in the corners.

Time to make the transition strip to hide the assembly numbers and dress it up.
It needs to be multiple layers of fabric, but I don’t want visible seams...time to break out the fusible web. It basically makes anything an iron-on, including itself.
Here’s its job:
The clasp/latch needed a bit more work. I thought using two 44mag cases appropriate.
Since the case gets very thin toward the mouth, it needed a bit of assistance in the form of some copper sheet.
Primitive, but cool.

Time to address the lid, as well as ruin a perfectly good belt buckle. [Credit: GypsmJim]
Pounded flat.
Find center
Scuff area
Glue !

Ya know, if you take a hand blowtorch and heat up the gun real good, it'll just melt right down into that grey foam!
Huh?
Oh, never mind!
That really looks good! I've been looking at my dad's veteran flag in that triangle box I put it in. I'll know when I find a box to incorporate the flag and his K22 together in the same box. It would look cool; gun is in excellent shape. But, I still shoot it a few times a year, like when I actually want a group of 3 inches or less! That latch was bad***!!!

That’s not far off the mark for the next case...stay tuned.
Thanks for all the kind words, gentlemen. If I can impress some cranky gun nuts...I must be doing something right.
