Default Shoulder Rigs.... they need to come back.

With that I'd consider cold weather (I am in Florida ), I usually dust off my ancient Galco "Jackass" rig.

This one is special to me; my father carried it when he was a plainclothes agent working dope cases in 1980s Miami. Yeah, he was legit Miami Vice. And now I'm carrying my 645 in it as my retired LEOSA carry gun.

Anyhoo, I find 'em to be extremely comfortable and a great way to wear large frame autos all day.

I have a few of them for different guns.

I like them okay, especially when driving or when fishing with waders on. Be careful with the thumb snap though. I had a 1911 fall out onto the sidewalk once. Luckily no damage done, but embarrassing.

Come back?
Iíve been using them as my primary carry method for the past 35 years. To my mind theyíre way underrated. When in the woods I prefer a chest rig. I donít like wearing a belt, especially after wearing a gun belt for most of my life. My preferred methods of carry:

Shoulder rig
Pocket (coat/jacket)
Chest rig
Fanny pack
OWB
Crossdraw

Never been out of style for me...ancient jackass rig from the 70’s to half a dozen Galcos for various pistols and revolvers.

The state agency I retired from always specifically banned them. Rationale was that in a stressful situation thinking goes out the window and you revert to training and muscle memory. IF you primarily carry strong side on the belt you will automatically go there for the gun.

That said, I have carried long barrel 44 magnums hunting in a shoulder holster but never for work or off duty.

Some people like them, they are just not for me.

I used to wear this Berns-Martin Lightniní Triple Draw holster many years ago but havenít since then.

ď Olly ď Ohlmeyer worked for S.D. Myres before going out on his own.
He patented this shoulder holster in 1945, this one was made for a Colt Government Model.

Most are but they donít have to be plain, this one is by Myres.

Extreme shoulder holster- a Heiser made for a Smith & Wesson Single Shot Target pistol.

Regards,

I have a jackass rig for my 1911 that I got off craigslist for $60; love the holster but don't get to use it much.

I will suggest anyone interested in a shoulder holster to steer clear of High Noon's Under Armor model. I can find a more detailed write-up that I did if there's interest, but suffice to say you'll regret buying one if you do. The company itself is great and I have several of their holsters and they're all quality useful products.

If you can find a very expensive should holster for less than asking, go for it; those are the ones you'll use. Cheap ones will live forever in your holster box unused.

I have had two of them since some time in the 70's. One for a 1911 and the other for a K frame. Don't use them much but keep them around in case I change my mind.

Miami JBT, I have the same Jack"***" rig from the same time period.

I was in my mid 20's and bought a Colt Delta Elite and ordered a rig for it. I remember back then, pre internet, calling up and explaining what I wanted, even though I was not an LEO. Back then it was an odd thing to want if you were just a mere civilian. I didn't have the Delta Elite for long but I kept that Miami Vice holster, it worked well for many other Colt 1911's and even Browning Hi Powers. I have about a half dozen Galco Shoulder Holsters, but this one was my first .

Funny, I just discussed this the other day in a different thread. I still have my El Paso Saddlery model that is set up for my 2.5" M686+, and speedloaders. I carried it down by the Rio Grande when I was feral hog hunting some years ago. I keep it in case I want to carry that revolver; it's comfortable in that rig and easy to conceal under a light jacket.

I've recently had to change and start using a cross draw shoulder rig instead of a strong side carry, due to right shoulder/rotator cuff issues
that now makes it impossible for me to draw from a strong side holster of any kind.

Since it seems like no one here makes a shoulder rig for a CZ75 PCR, I had one made by Falco Holsters, located in of all places, Slovakia.

It's a build your own affair, select one of the many holster styles available (I choose the Ocelot), type of carry (shoulder, OWB, IWB, crossdraw), holster material (3 grades of leather or ballistic nylon), and accessory options (magazine carrier, cartridge pouch).

I had this done up in the Jackass/Miami Classic style in their "premium" leather and lined.

Workmanship and leather quality is excellent... just need to be prepared for a 6-8 week wait.

New Galco Jackass rig. I had one in the 70ís for my issued Model 59. I have a Miami Classic in black for a 9mm Kahr that works under my motorcycle leather vest.

During the fall and spring my EDC is a Colt 1911 in a Galco Miami Classic II. It's a great rig that's really comfortable for carrying a full size, full weight gun.

I’m still on the hunt for a leftie upside-down model (Steve McQueen - Bullet) for a J frame.

I've been using various shoulder rigs for 35 years. It's my preferred method of carry.
As much as I like the Galco Miami Classic II and Jacka*s Rigs, the one I've settled on for carrying my Ruger Lightweight Commander at work is a Desantis C.E.O. It's easy on, easy off and since it has no off-side mag carrier it lightens the overall load and is super comfortable. Highly recommended!

It looks comfy, but I prefer to carry spare magazines "just in case".

I've also got a Miami Classic, bought it in 1992 when I got my G20; the Glock is gone now, but I still have the holster. I haven't tried contacting Galco, but I wonder if I could buy just the holster part to fit a different pistol and attach it to the rig in place of the Glock holster? I like the fit, but nothing I have will fit the G20 holster and allow use of the thumb break safety strap.

I usually carry a S&W CKRD pocketknife with it.

It is a cheap little beater knife that is surprisingly sharp and useful as a letter opener.

If you go on the Galco website, you can buy component parts. Not inexpensive but they often have a coupon or savings available. Just. Enter the gun type and it will pull up what you need.

Been looking at shoulder holsters for about a month. Last night I decided on a Galco Jackass for my Sig 239 40 caliber. I'll get an extra holster for another pistol if I like this enough.

Today I received a Don HumeIWB CLIP holster that is perfect for crossdraw of my new S&W 29, which I will carry when driving. ( iWAS going to get the Jackass for it, but wanted to try the smaller Sig first)

Tomorrow night, heading out of town because Hurricane Zeta has me in the bullseye once again----- I'm really getting tired of dodging hurricanes!

At least I have the Galco to look forward to when I return home.
