Can anyone assist with I.D on this holster? No markings that I can find; 10.5" long down the front side. Thanks

I believe that it is a replica civil war type cavalry holster and should fit a cap and ball revolver of the Colt or Remington type. It would be worn on the right side and be drawn by the left hand. The right hand would draw the sword on the left side. In the Civil War a lot of cavalry men found that the revolver was a handy tool to have.

Is there something that would confirm this is a replica/repro? I expect you are correct but, only asking because there was some authentic stuff in the collection it came from.

I would expect the rivets(they look stainless) would indicate repro, wouldn't touch it for that reason.

Does stainless turn green, verdigris? The snap is brass

I'm looking at the rivets on the backside, maybe it's my eyes but I don't see any verdigris. How 'bout a closeup of those rivets?

First hint is the hollow-tube rivets, which did not exist during the 19th Century. During the Civil War period rivets would be copper or brass alloy with solid pins and a washer-shaped piece over which the rivet end would be peened down with a setting tool. That same style of rivet remained in common use until WW2 or later, with the hollow-tube rivets appearing about the 1960's or so.

Second hint in the lack of any arsenal or contractor markings, always seen on military contract pieces.

Third hint is condition of the leather; no way that piece is 160-plus years old.

Reproduction piece made for re-enactors and black powder enthusiasts, probably within the past 40 years or so. Probably more of these reproductions have been made than all of the 19th Century originals combined.
