Shoulder holster with hammer revolver
For pocket carry I've used hammerless or shrouded hammer revolver models. I'm looking to get a shoulder holster and these are generally setup for a thumb break + hammer. Is this likely to get hung up on a jacket? I'm thinking about how it would work but am definitely interested in hearing from people with experience with these.

I carried a 4 inch Model 14 in a vertical shoulder holster for years and it was never an issue. Don't over think it just try it.

I've worn my recently acquired Jackass with a Model 60, and found it to be very comfortable...The off side holds two speed strips...I wear a thin vest most days for concealment, no print-through and no hang-ups on clothing...But after last weekend's gun show I have to find another hammered J-frame... ...Ben

You can carry the same guns you’ve been carrying in a shoulder holster. A number of manufacturers offer holsters that accommodate guns with or without an exposed hammer.
Older S&W on left, Current Galco Executive on the right:
Alessi (pull-thru snap):
I don’t have one, but Ken Null produces lightweight shoulder holster called the City Slicker. They do seem pretty slick!

Look at the Bianchi 9R. No longer in production but an outstanding item. Fleabay is your friend.

Here is a picture of my Bianchi 9R mentioned by Murdock.
Bianchi followed up with 9R-1 and 9R-2. Red Nichols has
said that 9R-2 was the best of the bunch.

Groo here
I looked for a shoulder holster for s long time.
Most had too thick straps or the buckles printed .
also the holster was just too thick... I carry larger guns.
Got a vest with holsters in it.[Wyoming Traders]
cover vest and rig in one.
There are many types and thickness but most will fit many different
guns.
Price is ok too...
Mine is a summer weigh in brown canvas , with snaps [I like best]
Will carry 2 guns, and 4 mags.[ other pockets for other things]
For fun and to see what it would feel like...
I carried 2 officers alu 45's and 4 ,10 round mags with 230gr ammo .
A pair of snubs would be a non event.
Ps. these vest are made with horse riders in mind so gun retention
is favered over speed of draw , but,
by grading the gun side of the vest and pulling it in front with the off hand
faster draws can be made...
Yes it was weighty BUT quite do-able.
The holsters are generic and the sights shows 2 single actions inplace.
Carring ammo , for revolvers I use my belt.
And "no printy"...d
add advanted , the vest is short so it does not "look" like your packing..

I used a 9R With my S&W model 49 and was happy with it.
But I really liked my 208 "Silent Partner" which I used with my 2 1/2" model 10 a little better...

After trying at least 4 holster designs I decided shoulder Holsters were not for me. I did find them uncomfortable but even had they not bothered me, they always require a covering of a jacket, sweater, vest, etc. Since I am usually the first one to sweat - that wasn't practical for me. Times and dress codes have drastically changed and other than to a formal party or wedding I never wear a sports jacket, suit, or covering that would hide a shoulder holster.
That said, it might work well for others and depending on your climate and body chemistry you may not have the same issues I had.

I have several..... but really only use them in the winter under a coat or jacket...... all I have to do is pull down the zipper half way and I have access to my gun.
My normal IWB at 5 O'clock carry isn't practical out in Penn's Woods in winter weather.
In full disclosure I bought all of mine decades ago used, but in as new condition, for pennies on the dollar in LGSs when the original owner came to the same conclusion as Chief38 above.
Cheap ones are just that ...... and I wouldn't spend the money they are asking for the good ones new.

In jacket weather, I carried a 4" Model 15 or a 4" Model 66 in a Bianchi X-15 for several years without any issues.
In warmer weather during the same period, I carried a Model 36 or Model 38 in an ankle holster; that was kind of a PITA, but it worked when I needed it.

Depending upon the specific make, model, and barrel length, the mechanical marvel of the breed is [one of] Bianchi's 9R series holsters.
- Completely ambidextrous.
- Accepts hammered, bobb hammered, and concealed hammer revolvers.
- Wearable with revolver inverted (upside down) and strong side break front. Worn inverted, holstered revolver becomes nearly invisible while being snag free. Holsters appear to last indefinitely and are periodically available via online auction sites. (Steve McQueen's holster in 1968's "Bullitt" functions similarly, with less inherent durability and reliability, compared with 9Rs).
- Can accept S&W "J" frame, S&W "K" frame, Colt "D" frame, Ruger SP101. I confirm the Ruger SP101 3-inch by thorough testing and subsequent use.
- Holster secures revolver so effectively that no safety strap or thumb break — of any sort — is provided or necessary.
- Worn as inverted shoulder holster, any 9R holster wearer is close to impossible for a non-wearer to disarm.
And now for the fine print.
***
This holster series has been discontinued for at least a generation. Holsters appear to last indefinitely and are periodically available via online auction sites.
Holster series is designed to use revolvers intended for concealed carry.
To get more information, search this web site for Red Nichols posts. Mr. Nichols is the designer.
Hope this helps.

I used one of the Safariland upside-down "Bullit" style holsters with a 2" Colt Lawman. No strap, very secure, accessible with either hand. Then one day as I removed my sport coat in the office a coworker yelled for me to freeze, walked over and gently stuck his finger between the Colt's cocked hammer and the frame, eased it out of the holster and made it safe. For some reason Colt felt a fixed sight snubby revolver need a sharply checkered target hammer. It had caught on the lining when I removed the jacket. To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, being 2 pounds of pressure away from a .357 Silvertip in the armpit focuses the mind admirably. I would not hesitate to carry a hammerless revolver in such a holster, though.

It's all in what you are comfortable with. As an earlier poster noted: Try it and see.
